Player Grades

The grading scale goes from -2 to +2, in half-point increments, for each play. Screens are graded as runs. Penalties are counted in whatever phase they were committed. Pre- and post-snap penalties are in the “Misc.” column. “Short” throws are less than 15 yards, “Deep” is over 15 or more. Everything else (scrambles, throwaways, reads, etc.) is under “Miscellaneous.” Parentheses in a column denote grades/snaps from the opposite side of the ball and are not included in grades/snaps from the player’s usual side. Snap counts are from Pro Football Reference. Box score and other relevant info can be found at that link as well.

When was the last Bears win that impressive?

Good question. The win over the eventual Super Bowl Champion Bucs in 2020 comes to mind. Beyond that, either when they took Tampa out behind the woodshed in 2018 or when they beat the Rams later that year. I lean toward the Rams game just because of how banged up that Bucs secondary was in that game. Our old buddy Chris Conte was on that team, but he was hurt, meaning they were playing someone worse than Chris Conte. No disrespect to Mitchell Trubisky – 6 TDs is 6 TDs. All disrespect to Chris Conte – he sucks. Screw that guy.

Anyway, yeah, this was an absolute paving. This was a bad three hours for anyone who still thinks we should’ve drafted Jalen Carter instead of Darnell Wright. And watching it back, the passing game was better than I thought it was live. Talk all you want about Caleb’s completion percentage, but there’s absolutely been growth throughout the season. He’s doing a much better job avoiding bad decisions. He’s still not making correct decisions as quickly as he needs to as consistently as he needs to for this offense to be super dangerous, but he’s getting better at it. I think we would all like a little more production, but I thought Coach Johnson saying they’re winning in spite of the passing game was unnecessarily harsh.

As long as we’re mildly criticizing Coach Johnson…

I did not love some of the decisions here. Handing off to Monangai on 4th down on the opening drive instead of sneaking it was a misplay. The stretch in the 2nd half where he seemingly forgot that it is legal to run the ball on 2nd down was frustrating, especially when the Eagles sniffed out a screen attempt on 2nd-and-1 and picked it. If you’re going to pass there, take a deep shot. Or just hand it off and pick up the yard. You’re paving them and their offense wasn’t getting much going. The only way they’re getting back into the game is if you let them back in.

He got Chicago free hot dogs, though.

True. And much of the gameplan was excellent. Mixing the types of rooms the way he did kept Philly from just teeing off on any one. Receivers were open; unfortunately, there were various miscues there. In particular, the turf monster won a couple reps. And to come full circle and put a bow on how impressive all of this was, this wasn’t some random goof that Coach Johnson got the better of, it was Vic Fangio. You know, our old friend (legitimately, not the sarcastic way like I said about that bum Chris Conte) who led that 2018 unit to a generational season. Dude might be the best defensive coordinator in football today and Ben Johnson outcoached him. That’s probably the thing to be most excited about going forward.

To Eagles Nation:

This was just business. We greatly appreciated the alliance, and if we don’t win it all this year, I hope you guys do. Unless we meet in the playoffs again and you knock us out. But other than that, good luck.
