Who The Hell Is Going To Start at Ohio State?

by Mike Anderson

Coming off an Orange Bowl loss to Clemson this time last year, we had a sense that Braxton Miller would be the guy in Columbus as he was in talks as a Heisman candidate. Fast forward one year and all hell has broken loose to the identity of signal callers at OSU.

Okay so let me do this as best as possible. Braxton Miller, returning Senior QB goes down in fall camp with a season ending shoulder injury. Enter J.T. Barrett, a relative unknown redshirt Frosh who would get the nod to lead the #5 Buckeyes in his place. The kid could play, not surprising right? After leading Them to a 11-1 record, (Oh how that VT loss doesn’t sting as it once did,) he goes down in The Game, but not until after posting very good numbers throughout the year, going undefeated in the B1G, (hey its not a huge accolade but its something right?) and starting a conversation about who will start the following year between himself and the aforementioned Miller.

Uh oh, shits about to get REAL.

So now we have our matchup of the Buckeyes vs. Heisman candidate (possibly Miller’s replacement) Melvin Gordon and his Badgers of Wisconsin. Not much to see hear, the Buckeyes routed Wisky 59-0.  To many fans’ surprise, this win helped the Buckeyes hurdle to #4 in the CFB Playoff standings setting them up for an eventual upset over the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. Now, I won’t go into many specifics here, but unless you’ve been living under a rock since the beginning of 2015, you know that OSU went on to upset Alabama and then walk into the National Championship game and dust the Oregon Ducks as well. The big story here is that it was done with the leadership of a third-stringer in Cardale Jones who, before this year, was infamously remembered for not wanting to “play school” and only cared about football.

So now what? Who will be the starting QB next year? Miller probably won’t opt to go to the league as he sat out a year, but he can go transfer somewhere else and play if his starting spot is threatened. Chances are Barrett will stay put as he had a great campaign in 12 legit starts before injury, and he could have also done what Jones did. But that’s a hypothetical. What did happen was that 12 Gauge led the Buckeyes to the championship. As big as a Miller fan I am, my dream scenario would be Miller transfers immediately to a contender, Jones starts for OSU for another year before leaving to the pros, and Barrett backs him up before taking the throne. Only time will tell, but for this Buckeyes fan, it’s a hell of a story.
