Blackhawks 2, Coyotes 1 – Recap
- Updated: March 13, 2015
Antoine Vermette made his return to Arizona Thursday night as the Hawks went down to Glendale to take on the Coyotes. The Hawks started out pretty well, getting a couple nice looks, but Mike Smith stopped each puck that got to him. The Coyotes would get the game’s first goal when Tobias Rieder beat Corey Crawford five-hole a little under five minutes into the game. Just under seven minutes into the game, the Hawks would get the game’s first power play when Martin Erat was sent off for holding Kris Versteeg. The Hawks, who had struggled on the man advantage against the Rangers on Sunday, converted on this one when Andrew Shaw found the puck in front of the net and backhanded it past Smith. The Hawks would get another power play 11:12 into the game after Mark Arcobello knocked Kris Versteeg into Smith and Smith, who didn’t know Arcobello’s push was the reason Versteeg landed on him, took a shot at Versteeg and was called for roughing. The Hawks were unable to make it 2-for-2 on the man advantage as the Coyotes were able to kill this penalty off. The rest of the period saw both teams get a few chances, but neither scored, and after the first period, the teams were tied at 1.
The Hawks would get out to a nice start in the second period, and would get their third power play of the game 2:43 into the period after John Moore was sent to the penalty box for boarding. The Hawks would come up empty on the power play and shortly after would go on the penalty kill for the first time in the game after Andrew Shaw was sent off for boarding. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. After a few minutes of back-and-forth play, the Hawks would go on the power play again, this one of the four-minute variety after Kyle Chipchura was sent off for a high stick on Joakim Nordstrom that drew blood. The Hawks would have a couple chances, but were unable to score in four minutes on the man advantage. After the Hawks’ power play ended, the Coyotes gained the momentum, but were unable to score before the Hawks took it back. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks before the period ended, but despite outshooting the Coyotes 34-12 through forty minutes, they were tied at 1 in goals.
The Hawks got a couple nice shots in the first half of the third period, but nothing found the back of the net. Just over eleven minutes into the period, the Hawks would go back to the power play after John Moore made another trip to the penalty box, this time for delay of game. The Hawks nearly had a goal after Brandon Saad chipped the puck in after a Marian Hossa stuff attempt got Smith down on the ice. However, the whistle had blown prior to Saad’s shot as an official had lost sight of the puck. Not long after, the Hawks would actually score, their second power play goal of the night, when a great carry by Kris Versteeg led to a goal for Brad Richards. Shortly after the goal, the Hawks would go back on the power play when Connor Murphy was sent off for cross-checking Andrew Shaw. Late in the period, the Coyotes would get a couple chances, but Crawford would keep the puck out of the net and maintain the Hawks’ lead. With 38 seconds to play, the Coyotes would get a power play after Joakim Nordstrom was sent off for boarding Oliver Ekman-Larsson. This was a very bad, dangerous play by Nordstrom, and as a result of the play, Ekman-Larsson left the ice. The Coyotes would get a couple good looks, but even with two more skaters on the ice than the Blackhawks had, were unable to get anything past Crawford, and the Hawks would win 2-1.
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Mike Smith, G, ARI (43 SV, 2 GA)
★★ Kris Versteeg, W, CHI (1 A)
★ Brad Richards, C, CHI (1 G (GWG))
