Canelo Golovkin Reach Verbal Agreement
- Updated: July 21, 2016
According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo and Golovkin have reached a verbal agreement to meet in the fall of 2017. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KO’s) will face the IBO/IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (35-0, 32 KO’s) in September 2017. The World Boxing Council ordered Alvarez and Golovkin to fight in the fall of 2016. Since he didn’t take the fight, Canelo vacated his WBC title. Therefore, the sanctioning body named Triple GGG as their new belt holder.
This is the next biggest fight of the sport. According to De La Hoya, the two camps have verbally agreed to a fight in September 2017. He promises to honor that agreement. “The fight will happen sooner rather than later, but this was not the time” De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes. “We are not going to wait eight or ten years like what happened with Mayweather and Pacquiao.”
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KO’s) will face WBO 154 pound champ Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KO’s) on September 17th at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. When asked about the possibilities of a fight with Golovkin, Canelo said “I’m just focused on the fight on Sept. 17 against Liam Smith, he’s a good fighter, a great champion and he’s very confident in his abilities.
Meanwhile, Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin is back in action on September 10th. He will defend his title against the IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. These fighters have a combined record of 71-0. Although Brook is moving up two weight classes to fight Golovkin, he’s a great challenge. “Kell Brook is the best in his division and a big test for me” Golovkin said in a recent interview.
In conclusion, if Canelo or Golovkin were to lose a fight between now and the fall of 2017, all the hype around this fight will go down the drain. This could be one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Equivalent to Randall vs Chavez in 94’, Rahman vs Lewis in 01’ or even Tarver vs Jones in 04′. I know, all those fights actually happened, but that doesn’t change the fact that boxing could take a huge hit. Let’s keep in mind that boxing is a business. Where there’s huge risk, there could be huge reward. Seems like in boxing all that matters is money, but who can blame them. With this in mind, we can all agree this fight is worth the wait.
