Street Fighting Man
- Updated: June 8, 2016
Seemingly everything today revolves around the Internet. It was only a decade or so ago when traditional media still ruled the roost and we were unsure of where Internet stars’ place in the market would be. One of those stars was a man named Kevin Ferguson, better known by the moniker Kimbo Slice. A former bouncer and bodyguard, Kimbo gained notoriety for his street fighting videos, one of the first viral sensations on YouTube. He parlayed that into decent MMA and boxing careers and the opinion on him was always mixed as he was seen as “that Internet guy.” One thing was undeniable though; Kimbo was an attraction. I’ll be the first person to tell you that I know next to nothing about MMA. I mostly don’t care about the sport but when Kimbo fought, I was watching.
Kimbo died Monday at the way too young age of 42. The man with hands of stone was said to have a heart of gold, which always came through in interviews. You could sense the tremendous love he had for his family and how he seemed to be one of the world’s genuine good guys.
Today, many people make anywhere from some supplemental income to a living from YouTube, with a few even becoming millionaires. Companies are developing shows exclusively for the Internet. So many are getting their media nearly exclusively over the web at this point that the future of traditional media sources is in question, something that seemed unimaginable only a decade or so ago. Many have had a hand in getting YouTube and the Internet as a whole to this point, but would be remiss to not mention the two belonging to Kimbo Slice.
