NCAA MBB Players to Watch

It’ s NEVER too early for college basketball! Okay, maybe it is, but who cares. It is this writer’s favorite sport, so any time is a good time to read, write, and live CBB. I started a lackluster series highlighting some of the more interesting players to take an extra look or two at last season and I’d like to begin the series again for this upcoming season. Here are two players to watch.

Georges Niang, F, Iowa State– Returning to the Cyclones this year, the best senior big in the country looks to finally get over the hump and begin a deep postseason run with many returning contributors.  The big question that most CBB fans have to be wondering is if Niang would have come back had he known the Iowa State Mayor, Fred Hoiberg, would be leaving the team to coach the Chicago Bulls? Niang was quoted saying he did not want to leave the program after taking a first round L to the mighty #14th seeded Blazers of UAB (he also broke a bone in his foot the year before in the NCAAs.)  Niang had his best season thus far in Ames last season averaging 15.3 ppg (down from 16.4 a year before,) and 5.4 rpg as well as shooting 46% from the field and an impressive 40% from three point land.  We will see what Niang does this upcoming year, which should be his best to date, both individually and as a team.

Marcus Paige, G, UNC—As much as this pains me to say, UNC returns a LOADED roster. Led by Paige, who some feel had an underwhelming season, this year’s Tar Heels team is looking to get past early exits in the NCAAs and possibly bring a championship back to Chapel Hill. Paige was fighting Plantar Fasciitis the entire year, but still posted numbers of 14.1 ppg (down from 17.5,) 4.5 apg, while shooting 41% and 39% from the field and three-point land respectively. The consensus on Paige is that he has done nothing but hurt his draft stock since his Sophomore year. I look forward to seeing how high he can ascend up the board, and how far he can take Roy’s bunch this year.

Look out for this series to be stronger for the 2015-16 NCAA MBB year.
