This Week’s Debate: How Great Is Serena Williams?
- Updated: July 13, 2016
During the Wimbledon women’s tournament, Taylor Rooks tweeted this out:
Serena is the GOAT. She isn’t just the greatest female athlete of all time. She is one of the greatest athletes EVER. Period.
— Taylor Rooks (@TaylorRooks) July 9, 2016
I said no way. First of all, while Twitter may think sports didn’t exist before 1980, they, in fact, did, and Taylor should probably Google Babe Didrikson Zaharias. As far as her place among the greatest athletes ever – I thought we’d be here a while if we were to list all the athletes ahead of Serena. Don’t get me wrong – she’s great, but there have been A LOT of people who have been great at something. (Again, Twitter, sports didn’t just start in 1980.) But then Geoff said she was near the top, Prentiss agreed, and Kelsey said top 5. So…
Where does Serena rank among the greatest athletes of all time? And before we have the Babe Ruth discussion again, guys like him absolutely count. Was he exactly Usain Bolt? No, but he was great at an athletic endeavor. That’s what we’re talking about here. (Although, if we’re being honest, doing anything as well as he played baseball after pounding a dozen hot dogs is pretty impressive.) In fact, if we were ranking just athleticism, Serena would be even further down the list. You’d have to give much of the NFL the nod. The next 300-pound man who can cover 40 yards in under 5 seconds that runs onto the court full speed at a tennis player will be the first. Anyway, we turn it over to you, the reader. Where does Serena rank? Leave a comment below, tweet us @GoodifitGoes_, and buy a shirt. Here’s that link one more time.
