UA-59049186-1 Blackhawks Draft Recap - Good if it Goes

Blackhawks Draft Recap

At this year’s NHL Entry Draft, the Blackhawks made the following selections:

Round 2, Pick #39 overall: RW Alex DeBrincat

DeBrincat slipped a bit in the draft, but other teams’ loss is the Blackhawks gain. DeBrincat had 101 points (51 G, 50) in 60 games this past year for the OHL’s Erie Otters and 104 points (51 G, 53 A) in 68 games for the team last year. The caveat: two seasons ago, his center was Connor McDavid, the #1 overall pick in the 2015 draft. This past season, it was Dylan Strome, the #3 overall pick in the 2015 draft. Still, DeBrincat is a fine player in his own right. While he may be only 5’9, he plays very tough. He skates well and has a nice shot. He’ll be back in Erie for at least this season. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities that he could make the team the following season, but the safer bet is another year in the OHL.

Round 2, Pick #45 overall: D Chad Krys

Krys registered 29 points (3 G, 26 A) in 53 games for the US National Team Developmental Program’s U-18 team this past season. In addition, he tallied 13 points (2 G, 11) in 18 USHL games with the USNTDP. Krys is another player who slipped a bit. SB Nation’s Chris Dilks said he had 1st-round potential early in the year, but weaknesses in his game came to light. On the plus side, Krys skates well can move the puck. He’ll spend at least a couple years at Boston University.

Round 2, Pick #50 overall: W Artur Kayumov

Kayumov had 31 points (12 G, 19 A) in 38 games for Russia’s U-18 team in the MHL (KHL’s junior league). The Hockey Writers raved about his shot, calling him a sniper with a fast release and a propensity for finding the back of the net. He’ll spend at least the next year in Russia, and likely the one after that, too, before getting a chance at the NHL.

Round 3, Pick #83 overall: G Wouter Peeters

Not much info here. Peeters is 6’5, the first born-and-bred Belgian drafted into the NHL, and posted a 3.27 GAA in 24 games with EC Salzburg in the Czech Republic and a 3.80 GAA in 5 games with that team’s U-18 club. He’s going to play with Jokerit in the KHL and/or their U20 club in the Jr. A SM-Liiga in Finland. Ask me more about him then.

Round 4, Pick #110 overall: D Lucas Carlsson

After going undrafted in 2015, Carlsson tallied 9 points (4 G, 5 A) in 35 games with Byrnas IF in Sweden’s SHL. He also had 11 points (1 G, 10 A) is 15 games with that team’s U20 club and 5 points (3 G, 2 A) in 4 games with Sweden’s U19 club. There’s not much info out there on Carlsson, but he seems like a project.

Round 4, Pick #113 overall: C Nathan Noel

Undrafted in 2015, was at a ball hockey tournament when his name got called this year. Noel put up 57 points (21 G, 36 A) with the Saint John Sea Dogs in the QMJHL last year. Project.

Round 5, Pick #143 overall: W Mathias From

From had 4 points (2 G, 2 A) in 16 games with Rogle BK in the SHL and 21 points (6 G, 15 A) in 36 games with the team’s U20 club. Elite Prospects has a scouting report on him. Sounds like there may be some potential there.

Round 6, Pick #173 overall: D Blake Hillman

Hillman had 11 points (3 G, 8 A) in 39 games at the University of Denver last year. Not much info on his game out there, but his Denver bio has some factoids on him if you care to know what his favorite movie is. I’m guessing his favorite hockey team’s gonna change. Already 20, I have to question how high his ceiling is.

Round 7, Pick #203 overall, D Blake Ryczek

Ryczek had 34 points (7 G, 27 A) over 47 games in the USHL last year split between the Sioux City Musketeers (29 gms, 3-11-14) and the Waterloo Black Hawks (18 gms, 4-16-20). Headed to Providence next year, he wasn’t a highly-ranked prospect, but he’s only 18 and Nate Leaman’s a heckuva coach, so I suppose there’s an outside chance with him.
