Frampton vs Santa Cruz II & Garcia vs Zlaticanin analysis
- Updated: January 28, 2017
Carl Frampton vs Leo Santa Cruz II
The first fight was such an exciting affair and close enough where a second go around is more than justified. Both Frampton and Cruz fought as was expected and clearly studied each other’s styles. In the end Frampton boxing, countering and speed did the trick in the judges’ eyes. Santa Cruz had his moments as well bringing the pressure up top and to the body and getting his jab off. The main problem though was that he didn’t hurt Frampton that much b/c he lacks the major power to do so.
I think if Frampton fights even smarter he can do a more thorough job than the first appearance but LSC can adjust as well. Keeping Frampton at the end of his jab and avoiding combination and exchanges that will highlight the speed difference as well as be more eyecatching to judges. I was wrong the first time but I’m gonna go with the underdog Santa Cruz again by Majority Decision. +160. I’m stubborn. Gimme a trilogy.
Mikey Garcia vs Dejan Zlaticanin
Mikey Garcia absence from boxing is well documented. He had beef with Arum like a couple other dudes but now he’s back. He’ll be facing a dangerous and undefeated WBC lightweight champion so things are exactly on schedule. Garcia can do it all. Box, slug. It’s why he was and still is so highly regarded in this sport. And he actually defeated legit competition like Orlando Salido and Roman Martinez. Zlaticanin is a really short(5’4”) but active fighter. He throws punches from all angles and pressures so much he never gives his opponents a chance to breathe. He burst onto the scene with the domination of undefeated Ivan Redkach in 2015 and won the vacant WBC title last year.
Garcia is the favorite and deservedly so being the more complete and talented fighter. I think he might face a bit of trouble early on with the style of Zlaticanin but he’ll adjust, let him tire out and time him. I think the uppercut will be a big weapon here.
