The Hot Seat: Michael Jordan the scapeGOAT? Part.One

In the wake of the heightened violence circulating the United States many professional athletes have taken a call to action to utilize their platforms to raise awareness about issues in minority communities. NBA Superstar Carmelo Anthony (Small Forward of the New York Knicks and Team USA) was one of the first players in recent weeks to start the “call for action” for Athletes and was given much deserved praise for his statements.

Carmelo Anthony, a member of the Jordan shoe brand also gave what some in the media considered a controversial answer when asked about the leader of the Jordan brand Michael Jordan. When asked about Jordan’s recent statement and contributions in the wake of the recent deaths of African Americans and law enforcement, Carmelo Anthony responded, “I thought it was brilliant, and it’s about time that he stepped up and said what he said, because at the end of the day, amongst us, he is our face,”.

The phrase that seems to have stuck out from Anthony’s quote is “its about time” in regards to Michael Jordan’s reluctance to speak about social issues. Was Carmelo Anthony out of line? He is considered as one of the biggest team Jordan players and statements that may be construed as belittling to the person whose logo is on the shoe Carmelo Anthony endorses may not bold well behold doors. But is he right? Social media took a vicious turn on Michael Jordan during the recent weeks with fans demanding Jordan speak about the issues concerning African Americans in society.  Why the recent outcry for Jordan in particular?
