Was Andrew Luck’s Record-Breaking Contract a Smart Move for Indy?

The NFL has a new highest-paid player after the Indianapolis Colts signed QB Andrew Luck to a new deal worth about $140 million for 6 years.

I’m not one to ever compare one man’s money to another but these are mitigating circumstances. That’s more money than league MVP Cam Newton and Super Bowl winning QBs Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson. Is he really worth all that cash? NFL record type of cash?

I don’t think so, so… “Let’s Fuckin Argue!”

I know the guy has a promising career ahead and he’s going to do great things. In the 2015 season, Luck threw 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. I understand he dealt with injuries but he played through them and the Colts went 2-5 in their division.

Instead, Irsay and the Colts rewarded him for his play over the first 3 years of his career and his promising potential while entering the prime of his career.

The Colts have done a fantastic job of wrapping up their young core; signing Anthony Castonzo, T.Y. Hilton, Dwayne Allen and drafting Ryan Kelly out of ‘Bama to start at center.

What if Luck regresses again? He was bench worthy last year. Nobody played good but his poor play stood out the most. How long can he play poorly on this record-breaking deal? If he misses the playoffs in back to back years in a poor division, will they want his head on a spike? While he has brilliant moments, he’s a turnover machine and makes them at critical moments. Record contract type guy: I think not.

“If you look at how we structured this contract, there is some anticipation on how much we budgeted in for 2016 but also going along with the realization that the cap will most likely to go up,” Irsay stated.

While that may be true Mr. Irsay and I don’t blame you for taking care of your stud QB, be leery of the situation the New Orleans Saints got in. They got stuck with Drew Brees taking up $30 million in cap space and constantly being a loser.
