The Misconceptions of Roman Reigns
- Updated: August 28, 2016
For close to 2 years now the Internet Wrestling Community has forced their opinions on Roman Reigns and the WWE’s attempts to push him as the top guy in the company. It has gotten to the point where no matter what Roman does, good or bad he will get a negative reaction for it. At this point in time Roman Reigns could save a family from a burning house, and the IWC (Internet Wrestling Community) will criticize him saying he didn’t do it fast enough. I have my fair share of criticisms about Roman Reigns as well, especially the push he has received and his microphone skills, but he is hardly as bad as IWC makes him out to be.
As an in-ring worker, Roman Reigns has proven to be consistent since the The Shield broke up in the Summer of 2014, and is constantly improving himself. His series with AJ Styles this year proved to me that he could hold his own with one of the best workers in the world, even earning the praise from AJ Styles for his wrestling ability. His matches with Bray Wyatt last year also tends to get overlooked, which was very good especially in particular their Hell in a Cell match. Heck, Roman Reigns was able to even drag an watchable match with the past his prime Big Show, which clearly isn’t an easy feat at this stage in time. What won me over on Roman being a good worker was his match with Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31. Going into that match a lot of the IWC voiced their opinions on how Roman wasn’t ready to headline a major PPV of that magnitude, and how him and Lesnar wouldn’t mesh well in the ring together. They were proven wrong as Roman and Lesnar tore the stadium down, and put on a great match that had everyone on the edge of their seats, in what was one of Lesnar’s best matches since his return to the WWE and Roman’s best singles match of his career to this date.
Granted, I can understand the displeasure of Roman’s push as the top face in the company. He doesn’t have the natural charisma or the mic skills to be that guy. I personally believe he would be a lot more effective as a bad ass heel who kicks the shit out of faces, and doesn’t need to talk much. It’s hard for fans to get behind Roman as an underdog face with his look and size. But let’s not kid ourselves the man is a very capable worker. But yet you have legions of 20+ year old virgins (one in particular overweight virgin who writes for this site) who love to nitpick everything the WWE does, and takes pro wrestling way too serious, chant “YOU CAN’T WRESTLE” at Roman Reigns despite his track recording proving this all wrong. And when Roman does have a good match, they pulled out the “HE WAS CARRIED BY A SUPERIOR WORKER” card, which is completely stupid. If you actually watch his matches, Roman isn’t carried and always holds his own with his opposition, hence why they constantly praise his ability to the media after his matches. That’s just a lazy excuse to discredit him. and they did the same to John Cena for years before that. John Cena has put on some of the greatest matches in the company’s history but for years the IWC virgins never gave him credit for it and constantly gave him the “YOU CANT WRESTLE” chants. Now it seems they are finally starting to appreciate Cena’s wrestling ability, and I hope they can do the same for Roman.
At the end of the day, people need to lay off Roman. I’m not saying he’s Bret Hart or an Eddie Guerrero level in ring performer, but he is a very good wrestler who understands the basic fundamentals on how to tell a story in the ring. Be mad at the company for giving him the top face push, don’t criticize Roman for it. He’s making the most of what he can, and has proven himself in the in the ring. Learn to appreciate, instead of hate.
