(Week of 2/15-2/21)

The Hawks went 1-1-1 on the week, beating Pittsburgh in a shootout on Sunday, then losing to Detroit in a shootout on Wednesday, and then losing to Colorado in an embarrassing third period effort on Friday. The Hawks did have a seven-game point streak going until the regulation loss on Friday, but in spite of this, they’ve been rather unremarkable for most of the last two months now. Some of this could be attributed to the team missing Kris Versteeg, but even since his return, the offense has been sluggish.

It’s time for Quenneville to shuffle the lines up a bit. The current arrangement is simply not working. Once again, we have to talk about the #2C spot. Brad Richards has been ice cold as of late. I would consider putting Andrew Shaw, Marcus Kruger, or Ben Smith here for a while and see how that works out.

EDIT: I write these after the last game of the week and post them every Monday. Sunday, the Hawks sent Raanta and Hartman to Rockford and called up Nordstrom and Darling. With Nordstrom up, I would do something like this:

Defense has been a problem during the Blackhawks’ slump as well. While the Hawks are not giving up a lot of bad chances as of late and Johnny Oduya has stepped up his play, the fifth and sixth defensive spots are somewhat in the air. Michal Roszival has not been particularly great as of late and David Rundblad would have to greatly improve just to get to Roszival’s level of poor play. Kyle Cumiskey has looked like a competent defenseman, but not much more than that. I think he could handle being the sixth defenseman after Trevor Van Riemsdyk returns from injury, but I think the Hawks could be better served by acquiring a defenseman before the deadline. This is the point where I really have to wonder just what in the world Stan Bowman was thinking trading Adam Clendening. Gustav Forsling has great potential, but I really feel like there are three defensemen (four if you count the injured Tim Erixon) on the roster right now that Clendening is better than.
