NFL Roundup: January 15, 2020

Programming note. While I work on nailing down a format for these posts, expect them to appear Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Luke Kuechly retires. Panthers ILB Luke Kuechly has retired at 28. Kuechly was a five-time All-Pro in Carolina, but dealt with multiple concussions during the later part if his career. In a video announcing his retirement, Kuechly said he still wants to play, but that doing so wouldn’t be best for his long-term health. [ESPN]

Panthers hire Joe Brady as OC. In happier news, for Carolina fans, the Panthers have hired LSU Passing Game Coordinator Joe Brady as their Offensive Coordinator. Brady was an offensive assistant for the Saints in 2017 and 2018 before heading up I-10 to work as Passing Game Coordinator at LSU, where he played a big role in the Tigers’ national championship and Joe Burrow’s development into one of college football’s all-time greats. Browns name Stefanski Head Coach. The Browns have named Kevin Stefanski their new Head Coach. Stefanski played college football at Penn and after graduating, stayed there as Assistant Director of Football
Operations. After a year in that role, Stefanski was hired on with the Vikings, where he served in a variety of assistant roles, including TE, RB, and QB coach at various points before being given the OC job after John DeFilippo was fired last year. He’s the third head coach in as many years for the Browns, which must be doing wonders for Baker Mayfield. [ESPN]

Antonio Gates retires. Chargers TE Antonio Gates has officially retired after 16 years as a Charger, half of them as a Pro Bowler. Gates did not play in 2019. [NFL.com]

Raiders hire Marinelli. The Raiders have hired Rod Marinelli as defensive line coach. Marinelli previously worked for Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay. [ESPN]

Just for kicks. Chad Johnson will be trying out for the XFL as a kicker. [ESPN] PFT Commenter will be doing likewise for the DC Defenders.
