NFL Team Preview: Baltimore Ravens
- Updated: July 20, 2016
Last Year:
Record: 5-11
Offense: 359.3 YPG (14th), 20.5 PPG (25th)
Defense: 337.4 YPG (8th), 25.1 (24th)
Injuries derailed the Ravens’ season in 2015. They lost their best defensive player in Suggs the first game of the season, Flacco only played in 10 games, and the Ravens ended up using 4 different QBs last season. Their best receiver, Steve Smith, got hurt and their 1st-round pick, Perriman, got hurt. With so many injuries, it was just difficult for the Ravens to overcome. Offensively, the only viable option they had to throw to was Kamar Aiken, the run game faultered, and the offensive line play was erratic. Yards-wise, the Ravens did good defensively last season finishing in the top 10. But the struggles of the offense turning the ball over and not sustaining drives put Baltimore in poor spots at times and it often resulted in the Ravens giving up more points than they should.

Breakdown
Offense:
The Baltimore Ravens have plenty of talent on offense to make some noise this season. At the skill positions, the receivers are the top group. Steve Smith is back for what is most likely his last season, Kamar Aiken broke out last season, the team added Mike Wallace via free agency and if he can ever get healthy, their 2015 1st round pick Breshad Perriman can also contribute. At running back, Forsett had a down year, but with more consistent line play, maybe he can bounce back, and if not, Kenneth Dixon, their 2016 4th round pick, has a lot of talent and may be ready to start. And of course, veteran QB Joe Flacco has lead a Super Bowl run before and if he can stay healthy in 2016, the Ravens should be fine under center. The biggest question for them is gonna be how the offensive line performs. They lost the entire left side of the line and in their place are starting 3rd-year guard John Urschel who has limited experience and a rookie at left tackle Ronnie Stanley, their 6th overall pick in this year’s draft. They do have the best guard in the NFL in Marshall Yanda and center Jeremy Zuttah isn’t bad but Ricky Wagner is average at best at the RT position so the 2 tackles spots could be a issue.
Defense:
The Ravens have the pieces in place to be a good defense this upcoming season. Up front, the Ravens should be good. Brandon Williams is 1 of the best interior defenders in the NFL and is an absolute beast of a run stopper. Jernigan is a pretty good player as well and they drafted some nice players that should add plenty of depth in Kaufusi and Henry. At linebacker, future Hall-of-Famer Terrell Suggs is back after missing all of last season. On the other edge, Dumervil is starting to get up there in age, but is more a specialist pass rusher these days which means 2nd-round pick Kamalei Correa should get snaps as well. C.J. Mosely mans the middle at LB and Arthur Brown, the former 2nd-round pick in 2013, will get his first opportunity to be a full time starter. In the secondary the Ravens are going undergoing changes. Things will be completely different at safety with Webb moving from corner to strong safety and pro bowl free safety Eric Weddle coming over from San Diego. At corner, Jimmy Smith is the best of the bunch and Powers comes over from Arizona to man the slot where he thrived last year. The other outside corner spot is up for grabs as Wright, Davis, and Arrington are all competing.
