Welcome To Michigan Team 137: Early Enrollees

Devin Bush, Jr., 4* ILB

(Use link if on mobile.)

Strengths

  • Speed
  • Good nose for the ball
  • Tackling
  • Pass rushing

Needs work

  • Coverage? (Not much footage of this in his Hudl film.)

In 2016: The latest tape for him on Hudl is his mid-season junior highlights. This is quite an impressive tape for a high school junior. The only LB who saw the field last year that returns is Ben Gedeon. Bush should see the field.

Carlo Kemp, 4* DE

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1751770/highlights/242243379/v3

Strengths

  • Sets the edge well
  • High motor
  • Good nose for the ball

Needs work

  • Block shedding

In 2016: The most recent film of Kemp available on Hudl was his junior year highlight tape, so that’s all I have to go on right now. It’s a nice tape for a high school junior, but he needs some polishing before being ready to play at the next level. Since that tape, he’s had his senior season of high school football and will have spring practice, so I don’t think it’s out of the question that he sees the field this year. If Lawrence Marshall is able to play a significant role this year, though, Michigan can redshirt him.

Sean McKeon, 3* TE

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2167128/highlights/302399433/v3

Strengths

  • Speed
  • Hands
  • Route running

Needs work

  • Blocking footwork
  • Needs to add size

In 2016: Redshirts. While his film looks better than one would expect for a 3* prospect and he was an early enrollee, Michigan should be more than fine at TE this year and McKeon will need to put on about 30 pounds or so. Even when he does add the necessary bulk to play TE at the college level, he should still be plenty fast for a TE.

Ahmir Mitchell, 4* WR

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2087807/highlights/310001400/v3

Strengths

  • Size
  • Speed
  • Ability to high-point the ball
  • Quick feet
  • Defense: covers ground well

Needs work

  • Route running
  • Defense: Coverage

In 2016: Mitchell is a bit difficult to project since we’re not quite sure on which side of the ball he’ll end up. If he’s on offense, he probably redshirts in 2016, since Michigan should be fine at WR next year. If he’s on defense, he will almost definitely redshirt, unless he sees the field on special teams. He’ll need some polishing before competing for a spot at (I’m guessing) SS.

Kingston Davis, 3* RB

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/2593774/highlights/213740380/v3

Strengths

  • Hard runner
  • Vision
  • Can catch the ball out of the backfield
  • Blocking

Needs work

  • Top-end speed

In 2016: The film I had to go on was his junior highlights, and with as good as that looked, it’s hard to imagine that he doesn’t see the field in 2016. How much? Dunno. Depends on what De’Veon Smith’s role is, and what Isaac, Johnson, Higdon, and Kareem Walker bring to the table.

Kareem Walker, 4* RB

Strengths

  • Agility
  • Hard runner
  • Explosiveness

Needs work

  • Vision
  • Top-end speed
  • Blocking? (Not much shown in film)

In 2016: Note that the above video is his junior highlight tape. Going off that, I think he needs a bit more polishing than Davis at first, but has a higher ceiling. The issue with Walker is going to be his vision; to me, it seems like we’re going to see what might have been if Derrick Green had been coached well. I think what you expect from Walker in 2016 depends on what you think Tyrone Wheatley can do. Smith and Johnson did an awfully good job in the bowl game of finding holes and hitting them, but it took a season to get there. I don’t think expecting the same for Walker is ridiculous, so right now, I would predict that he’ll see the field a bit here and there before becoming ready to really contribute in 2017.

Brandon Peters, 4* QB

http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1434351/highlights/311053456/v3

Strengths

  • Touch
  • Arm strength
  • Throws a nice deep ball
  • Mobility
  • Decision-making

Needs work

  • Not-so-fluid throwing motion at times; bit of a tendency to aim the ball
  • Throws on the run

In 2016: As impressed as I am with Peters, ideally, he redshirts next year. Michigan has John O’Korn, Shane Morris, Wilton Speight, Zach Gentry, and Alex Malzone at QB right now. Even if one transfers and Gentry moves to TE, Peters not redshirting would say not-so-good things about the QB position.
