CHICAGO CUBS (103-58) vs. SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (87-75)

Games 1, 2, 5 (if necessary) in Chicago, Ill.

Games 3, 4 (if necessary) in San Francisco, Calif.

If you don’t factor in the even year stuff for the Giants, and look at this matchup on paper, it overwhelmingly favors the Cubs. The Cubs are the best team in baseball by a wide stretch, maybe even more so than their record indicates. They destroyed the NL Central without a sweat, and outside of brief stretch before the All-Star break, basically won 80 percent of their games. They’re led by an eventual Hall of Fame manager, one of the best pitching staffs front to back in recent memory, and a dangerous offense with two MVP candidates in the middle of it. What could go wrong? Well, the Giants have that intangibles factor that is immeasurable. They’re like the Blackhawks in hockey, the Spurs in basketball, and the Patriots in football. They just have incredible leadership at the top that trickles down to the entire roster when it matters most. Bruce Bochy is every bit the leader Maddon is, with 3 rings sitting on his hand. They also have, quite possibly, the biggest “big game” pitcher in the history of baseball. This really is a match made in heaven for baseball fans. Expect every inning to be contentious. Fortunately for the Cubs, Madison Bumgarner won’t pitch all 9 innings of every game, and the Giants bullpen is shaky at best. The Cubs bullpen, like the rest of the team, is a weapon and a strength. It will play a huge part in the series.

PREDICTION: The Giants will give the Cubs all they can handle. This series is a great litmus test for the Cubs, who will have all the pressure on them. The Giants will steal a game at Wrigley, however the Cubs will win this series in 5 games, and move on by the narrowest of margins.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS (95-67) vs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (91-71)

Games 1, 2, 5 (if necessary) in Washington D.C.

Games 3, 4 (if necessary) in Los Angeles, Calif.

This series will get overlooked by the Cubs/Giants, the fireworks of Jays/Rangers, and the presence of David Ortiz and the Red Sox taking on the Indians, but it will still be an absolute dandy of a series. Clayton Kershaw against Max Scherzer in Game 1. Isn’t that enough? We can only hope there’s a Game 5 so we can see it twice. The lineups in this series may not wow you with batting average, but they are two very potent lineups. Bryce Harper didn’t hit for average this season, and he probably is hurting worse than we know, but he’s still as big of a threat as anybody in baseball. Adrian Gonzalez is old, but still clutch. Daniel Murphy and Corey Seager will make headlines this series. The deciding factor is will the Nationals be able to win games late, where the bullpen is somewhat shaky. The Dodgers is too, but Kenley Jansen is a terrific closer. This is the toughest series to predict.

PREDICTION: Kershaw outpitches Scherzer in Game 1 in Washington, setting the tone for the series. The Dodgers take this series in 4, winning a few tough games late.
