All-Star Saturday Night Predictions

To me, All-Star Saturday Night is the best part of any of the all-star festivities from any of the four major sports. Here are my predictions for each of the events.

Shooting Stars

Teams:

Team Bosh: Chris Bosh, Dominique Wilkins, Swin Cash
Team Curry: Stephen Curry, Dell Curry, Sue Bird
Team Millsap: Paul Millsap, Scottie Pippen, Elena Delle Donne
Team Westbrook: Russell Westbrook, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Tamika Catchings

There’s no sure-fire way to predict this contest, since it involves a half-court shot. Team Curry should certainly have the most chances at the shot, but there’s no guarantee they get one to fall quickly. Team Bosh is the two-time defending champion, but I like Team Millsap here. There’s enough shooting to get them to the half-court shot quickly enough, and I like the bigger players’ chances at that shot.

Skills Contest

Trey Burke won the contest with Damian Lillard last year. Brandon Knight is the only other player in the field with prior experience in this contest, participating two years ago when Damian Lillard won it solo. I like Burke here. Go Blue.

Three-Point Shootout

Kyrie Irving
Kyle Korver
Marco Belinelli
Wesley Matthews
J.J. Redick

On paper, I think most people would say Curry’s the favorite. However, he will have already participated in the Shooting Stars contest, and who knows how many half-court shots he’ll have to take. Also, he’s 0-for-3 in this contest. Belinelli won it last year, Irving won it the year before that. Nobody has ever won multiple non-consecutive contests; the only person to win two in non-consecutive years was Jeff Hornacek, who won in 1998, and then again in 2000, with the 1999 contest, as well as the All-Star Game, having been cancelled due to the league’s lockout. I like Klay Thompson to take the contest this year.

Slam Dunk Contest

Giannis Antetokounmpo
Zach LaVine
Victor Oladipo
Mason Plumlee

Out of these four, I think Oladipo’s the best pure athlete. His old Twitter handle was VICICANFLY4IU and that wasn’t an exaggeration; Oladipo really can fly. However, he was very unimpressive in the one dunk contest I’ve seen him in prior to this, at Hoosier Hysteria a few years back (I think 2010). Sure he could jump, but he couldn’t execute the dunks. I like Zach LaVine and I am very much looking forward to watching Charles Barkley try to pronounce Giannis Antetokounmpo’s name.
