Court Kings: LeBron James Vs. Steph Curry Pt.1
- Updated: August 2, 2016
There is one minute, 51 seconds remaining in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
Andre Iguodala is on a fast break with Stephen Curry to take the lead in the game. Iguodala races down the court with Steph Curry on the wing and J.R. Smith defending the play. Iguodala passes it to Curry who surprisingly returns the pass back to Iguodala who then rises up for the finish. Just as Iguodala looks to finish a contested lay-up over Smith, LeBron James enters the frame and delivers a game changing block to keep the score even. Less than a minute later, Kyrie Irving drains the championship sealing jump shot over Curry to give the Cleveland Cavaliers the lead and eventually the series.
Although those last two minutes changed the fortunes of two franchises, it also affected the opinions in the NBA landscape of the two teams’ franchise players. Before we dive deep into debate, lets take a step back and look at some of the highlights of both players’ careers prior to those final minutes.
For years, LeBron has been recognized as one of the most skilled passers and most dominating finishers in NBA history. With his combination of speed, power, finesse and basketball IQ, LeBron has reigned as the NBA’s top dog of his era winning four MVPs in the past ten years.
His doubters were left with little to say after winning his first championship in 2012 with the Miami Heat. Prior to that, Lebron was considered another great superstar without a ring to solidify his greatness. With that championship as well as another in 2013, LeBron cemented his name in NBA lore but still wanted to accomplish one more goal.
In 2014, the quote “I’m coming home.” headlined sports media as the prodigal son returned home to Ohio to bring a championship to the Cavs. LeBron, who was coming off of four straight finals appearances faced three challenges; Bringing a world title to Cleveland, beating a new threat in the Western Conference, and being dethroned as the best player in the NBA. LeBron was considered the underdog for the first time in almost a decade (2007 finals vs The Spurs) as he faced a newly acquired adversary. This adversary coming in one named Stephen Curry.
I’ll talk about that guy in part two.
