Top 100 NBA Players of 2016: 80-71

  1. SG. Wesley Matthews – Dallas Mavericks
  • 2-way SG that still hasn’t quite returned to form after tearing his Achilles
  • Incredibly high-volume 3 point shooter
  • Tenacious on-ball defender that can really be a nuisance
  1. PG. Derrick Rose – New York Knicks
  • Former league MVP that’s become a sad shell of himself due to countless injuries
  • Can still score and get into the paint, but his physical tools aren’t what they used to be and his lack of jump shot and ability to create for others has become more exposed.
  • Below average defender that doesn’t really impact that end of the floor.
  1. PG. Jrue Holiday – New Orleans Pelicans
  • Huge 6’4 PG who is notoriously injury prone but can really play when healthy, was more aggressive than ever last season.
  • Versatile offensive player capable of performing the duties of a 1 or 2 guard. More than reliable passer and playmaker that makes good reads in the PnR game and has no problem putting the ball in the hole himself.
  • Injuries have taken their toll on Holiday’s game the most defensively. About 4 years ago, when he was last fully healthy, he was considered 1 of the best young defensive guards in the game with a future as a lock down defender.
  1. PF. Nerlens Noel – Philadelphia 76ers
  • Young defensive stud on the brink of being a defensive player of the year candidate
  • Defensively, he does everything, Blocks shots, gets steals, defends on the block, defends PnR, and crashes the boards.
  • Right now, at his best offensively as a dive man or lob finisher, but he appears to be improving on his game and determined to be more as he does shoot in the mid-range area (all be it ineffectively at the moment, he hit only 27% of his hook shots and 28% of his jumpers).
  1. C. Andrew Bogut – Dallas Mavericks
  • Brute Australian big man that can impose his physicality on games as an interior defender and rebounder.
  • Elite interior defender that is incredibly difficult to score on 1 on 1 down low and he offers tremendous rim protection.
  • Offensively he doesn’t have much post game or natural scoring ability and he can’t really shoot. But he is very good finishing around the basket and a terrific passer.
  1. PF. Serge Ibaka – Orlando Magic
  • 3 and D big man? (If there is such a thing)
  • Offensively his game these days is almost exclusively limited to shooting 3s and mid-range jumpers.
  • Still a good defender but no longer the elite force that was known as “Iblocka”
  1. C. Tristan Thompson – Cleveland Cavaliers
  • Glass-cleaning specialist that can change games with his work on the offensive boards alone.
  • Limited overall offensively, but very effective in his role. Sets good screens, crashes the boards, finishes around the basket.
  • Very good defender that put on a clinic in the finals for how the modern NBA big can impact a game defensively on the perimeter.
  1. C. Marcin Gortat – Washington Wizards
  • Veteran Polish big that is still effective in large part due to good basketball IQ and solid fundamentals.
  • Automatic inside of 10 feet and not too shabby from mid-range either. At his best around the basket can score it in the screen game or with his back to the basket.
  • Tough interior defender that excels on the defensive glass and offers some rim protection.
  1. SF. Rudy Gay – Sacremento Kings
  • Underachieving 1-way player that typically only shows up to score
  • Huge wing that can put the ball in the hole in a wide assortment of ways. He’s effective on or off the ball. He can score via triple threat, post ups, ball screens, off ball screens, slashing, or spotting up.
  • Underwhelming and disinterested defender that often looks to do the bare minimum required of him.
  1. SF. Jae Crowder – Boston Celtics
  • Tough defensive-minded wing with an improving offensive game
  • Not a true scorer, but can contribute offensively off the ball and is more than just a spot up shooter.
  • Physical, gritty player on the defensive end that gives a lot of opposing players problems.
