Chicago Bears Preview
First of all, I’m a lot higher on the Bears than most people, especially most media in town. I have always liked and respected John Fox as a coach and like what he has done with the roster after getting what I thought was the worst team in the league last year. I went really hard on the under win total on them last year and would have been a slam dunk if they didn’t pull back to back miracles on the road in Green Bay and St. Louis to make me sweat out the last month.
The offense has young weapons and a respectable offensive line so Cutler doesn’t have to throw jump balls up or get blindsided half the time. The backfield is still unproven, but there are two playmakers who should come into their own with a healthy dose of playing time. Jay Cutler is always a wild card, but hopefully he learned by last year he does not have to do schoolyard bullshit and heave it all over the yard to be successful. Although I’m not much of an Alshon Jeffrey fan, he just needs to stay on the field to open it up for Kevin White and the passing game. The game plans will be a grind out, boring style but unless you have an MVP at quarterback, it should be a smart formula.
The high praise I’m giving the offense and coaching staff is pretty much the opposite for the defense. The defensive back situation is awful and they have 10 guys vying for 4 spots, which means they have zero with any ability. The Bears’ best linebacker cannot get on the field because of a chronic leg problem and the top draft pick is an athletic freak, but hasn’t shown much because of little injuries. The line should be solid but in a passing league, this squad wont get off the field enough to make game changing impacts on a consistent basis.
Good thing the Bears cut Gould. He was awful last season and cost the Bears two wins (which I thank him for) as the highest paid kicker and being completely unreliable from 40 yards out. It is a no-brainer but it took so long to let him go because they were just waiting for Connor Barth to become available.
With that said I’m taking their team total over 7 -110.
Season Preview and Plays
This should be one of the more exciting league years barring a complete meltdown of injuries to big name players. There will be a lot more parity in years past and aside from two teams, the rest of the league could make the playoffs.
Green Bay over Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl
Denver Broncos Under 9 -110
The Broncos schedule is not kind. They have an extremely tough road schedule and currently have the worst QB in the league. Let’s remember that Gary Kubiak is the coach here and if it was not for some divine intervention to hand Peyton Manning a nice going away present, we would most likely still be clowning him.
Kansas City Chiefs Under 9.5 EV
The entire run game still is not healthy. Alex Smith will have to try and win games with his arm by going downfield which is not going to happen. The defense is a year older and Andy Reid is a year dumber. Eventually, this team is going to have a real rough year so here it is on a nice number.
New York Jets Under 7.5 -115
I hate the Jets. Fitzpatrick is terrible QB and I do not know how many times I saw him just lob up balls in the middle of the field or the tons of broken plays ending up in touchdowns. If some of those garbage throws go the other way, this guy is probably back on the scrap heap.
New Orleans Saints Over 7 -130
The Saints have a good passing game again with plenty of weapons and a solid run game. The defense is still a concern but hopefully it is not as bad as it has been in the past. The home schedule should help out as well and return some of the “Who Dat” home field back and get back to a 9-10 win team.
