Bears Preview Week 1 Preseason

Going into this game there are a lot of question marks for the Bears. After losing their starting center Hroniss Grasu at the Bears Family Fest to a freak injury, there was  another question created. How will the offensive line rebound? Can the defense be great with all the new pieces? What kind of offense will they have? Etc. All teams have questions going into their first preseason game, but only the bad teams have a novel worth of questions. Although the first preseason game the starters only play maybe two series, it will be nice to see actual game film. Most of Cutler’s weapons have been hurt this summer including Alshon (injury prone), Miller (walking i.r.), and Royal (haven’t been healthy since he got here). I can’t see there has been any consistency with the offense at all. The running backs are unproven and the pass catchers keep missing practice.

On the defense side of the ball, they will depend on young guys like Amos, Fuller and rookie Floyd to make plays. Amos was solid last year, Fuller was up and down but showed flashes and Floyd is an unknown. A situation to monitor is that Pernell McPhee is still recovering from knee surgery. He is a proven commodity on that defense, but the linebacker core is the strength of this team especially with Freeman and Trevathan. Vic Fangio has so many pieces that he can plug in and out of the defense to create different looks. On paper it looks like the defense will have to carry this team and the offense will have to play mistake free football to help them win games. In today’s NFL unless your defense is flat out dominant then your offense can game manage. I don’t see the Bears defense being dominant , and so the offense will have to make plays.  It’s Alshon and everybody else as far as I am concerned when it comes to that. But we will see if there will be diamonds in the rough that emerge from the preseason starting Thursday with game 1.
