Welcome to Chicago: Germain Ifedi, Guard

Kyle Long’s retirement left a vacancy at right guard. Rashaad Coward was clearly not the guy, which left Alex Bars and, uh, Alex Bars as options to fill the spot, and his viability to do so is questionable at best.
Enter Germain Ifedi. Ifedi was drafted 31st overall out of Texas A&M by the Seahawks in 2016. Starting his career at guard, he missed the first three games of his rookie season with an ankle injury. He made his debut in week 4 of the 2016 season and has only missed one game since. Hey, the best ability is availability, right? The saying definitely rings true for Ifedi, as the rest of his abilities leave quite a bit to be desired. As he is an offensive lineman, I have no stats to cite, but I can tell you that his tape shows more than a few missed blocks. As a tackle, he especially struggled protecting the edge, but that’s not overly concerning as the Bears intend to use him inside. He generally at least knows who he should be blocking, which would be an upgrade over Coward, but your author cautions against expecting much more than that. He should be capable and earn a new deal with the team after the conclusion of this initial 1-year agreement, but do not expect him to turn into a Pro Bowl all of a sudden.
