Welcome to Chicago: Jimmy Graham, Tight End

Tight end was a major priority for the Bears in the off-season after Trey Burton missed half of 2018 and was rather unproductive when he was around. Enter Jimmy Graham. In New Orleans, Graham was a major weapon, going over 1,000 yards twice in his five seasons in The Big Easy and narrowly missing that mark in a third. From there, Graham headed to Seattle, where he missed 5 games in his first season as a Seahawk, but still racked up 600 receiving yards in the games he played. He bounced back the next year with 923 yards and 6 TDs in a full season. His third and final season in Seattle saw signs of decline, as he totaled just over 500 receiving yards, but found the end zone 10 times. Following that 2017 season, he headed to Green Bay. In his first season as a Packer, his receiving total increased to 636 (shoutout Olde Springfield), but he only caught a pair of TD passes. His second and final season up north saw Aaron Rodgers treat him like a family member and largely ignore him. Graham had only 60 targets all of last year and it’s not like there were a bunch of other tight ends there eating up targets; Marcedes Lewis had 19, Robert Tonyan had 15, and rookie Jace Sternberger was targeted once in limited action.

So that brings him to Chicago. The hope here is that despite the fact that he’ll turn 34 in November, he’s still got enough in the tank to give the Bears a quality season or two while Cole Kmet develops and the Bears find other younger options. Graham’s best days are clearly behind him, but he remains a capable receiving tight end. Placed in an offense that values his presence, a season akin to his final one in Seattle or Trey Burton’s 2018 seems plausible. As long as he’s not a total liability in the run game, this projects to be a positive move, albeit a somewhat expensive one, with Graham due to receive $16 million over 2 years.
