Eagles 29, Bears 14 – Recap

Box Score

Grading Primer (I wrote this about Michigan, but the grading procedures are still relevant.)

For the second straight week, a poor second half did the Bears in. This time, it was much more discouraging, particularly because a few Bears went down in the process. Danny Trevathan will need thumb surgery and is being called out indefinitely, though he shouldn’t be gone for too long as he can play with a cast after the surgery. Jay Cutler has a sprained thumb, and while he won’t need surgery right now, the situation will have to be monitored and he doesn’t seem likely to play against Dallas Sunday night. Eddie Goldman will be out around 4 weeks with a high ankle sprain. The most devastating injury was the loss of Lamarr Houston for the season with a torn ACL. So, yeah, not a lot going right right now. It’s a long season and there’s plenty of time for the Bears to turn things around, but the immediate future doesn’t look too encouraging. It’s important to remember, though, that this is a long-term rebuild. The Bears are going about this the right way and attempting to build a great franchise, not just a great team for a year or two. To me, the criticism in the local media of John Fox and Ryan Pace seems very unwarranted. The guy I do have some questions about early on is Dowell Loggains. He’s sown the ability to develop players, but his game-calling has been not great.

How’d they do?

Ratings are out of 100 and should be read similar to Madden ratings. Overall ratings for the season and the change in that number from the previous week are in parentheses.

QB: 69 (Season: 77, Change: -12)

Cutler had a great deep ball to Jeffery, but outside of that, wasn’t particularly great. Then he had two back-breaking mistakes. Brian Hoyer was just okay when he came in. If he has to be the guy for any length of time, the Bears are in trouble.

RB: 80 (Season: 80, Change: 0)

Jordan Howard impressed me in his NFL debut. Langford was solid. Ka’Deem Carey was okay before leaving with an injury.

FB: 70 (Season: 72, Change: -1)

Lasike didn’t do a whole lot.

WR: 92 (Season: 90, Change +5)

Pay Alshon Jeffery. He’s showing why he’s the best receiver in the division and asserting himself as one of the elite receivers in the entire league. He had some great plays as a pass catcher and a couple nice blocks. Kevin White was better. I would like to see someone take a shot deep with him. Eddie Royal had a very nice game. He got criticized in the Trib in the days after the game and I have no idea why. Trib -1.

TE: 75 (Season: 77, Change: -1)

Miller didn’t do a whole lot. At this point, I’m not sure of the reason for his lack of involvement in the passing game: play calling, poor play on Miller’s part, or the wide receivers just being that good. Paulsen was just okay in the ground game.

OL: 70 (Season: 76, Change: -4)

Leno graded out a bit better than he looked. Massie’s grade is pretty bang-on. Remember that 0 is bad for an O-lineman, even when teams pass the ball a bunch. Josh Sitton was excellent. Cody Whitehair took a nice step at center. Kyle Long looked better than he graded out, but still had a bit of a rough day.

DL: 79 (Season: 82, Change: -2)

Eddie Goldman was solid, nobody else really stood out. Will Sutton was good enough when he was in that I don’t think the loss of Goldman will be crippling for the defense.

OLB: 90 (Season: 89, Change: +1)

Losing Lamarr Houston sucks, but Sam Acho had a nice game and should be solid enough until Pernell McPhee gets back. Willie Young played very well. Leonard Floyd quietly had a good game.

ILB: 86 (Season: 91, Change: -3)

Jerrell Freeman continued to look like an excellent pickup. Trevathan was just okay before exiting with an injury. Jonathan Anderson was uninspiring when he was on the field. Sam Acho can play inside and I would be kind of surprised if he didn’t take on a rather sizeable role while McPhee, Houston, and Trevathan are all out.

CB: 84 (Season: 84, Change: 0)

Tracy Porter was pretty good. Jacoby Glenn had an encouraging performance. Deiondre’ Hall caught a -2 on a boneheaded personal foul, his play was solid.

S: 79 (Season: 78, Change: +2)

Harold Jones-Quartey was a little more involved than last week. He was pretty good. Adrian Amos didn’t make much of an impact.

Yet To Be Named Gimmicky Award Meant To Show Who The Best Overall Performers Were

If you have an idea of what I should call this, let me know. Twitter handle and e-mail address are at the end of the blog.

Anyway, up to 3 may be awarded per player. Not necessarily the highest-graded players since different grades mean different things to different players (refer to the primer).
