As you look over the college football landscape, you see Heisman candidates everywhere: Lamar, JT, Jabrill, Deshaun, and Leonard etc. are all on the board. But what sticks out to me is that you have black quarterbacks that scouts are giving a real chance to be drafted high in the first round. Lamar Jackson is not eligible this year, but that does not stop the hype. So that leaves us with Deshaun Watson, Deshone Kizer and J.T. Barrett. Scouts, for whatever reason, are not as high on JT. But given the success of Dak Prescott (afterthought 4th round pick) and Teddy Bridgewater they should pay attention. There are young quarterbacks succeeding in the NFL and some are African-American. Tyrod Taylor came from nowhere and now has been paid like a franchise player. Of course Cam and Russell have been very successful. Just wish that RG3 and Kaep could have sustained success. Cannot forget Jameis, who is in a system in which he can flourish and has been given the reins. Although he is not mobile, he is praised for his IQ, arm strength, and leadership.

I am not sure what would the NFL do if there are 3 mobile African American guys taken in the first round. You have to realize the position is changing. The great pocket passers are getting older and retiring. There is a new wave of guys that have a chance to take over and play. These guys have to be given tools to succeed in order to play well. Often times, they are drafted to bad teams and bad organizations with no plan or structure. I hope Teddy comes back healthy, but look at his team. “Great defense with a healthy AP and not asked to do much” was their formula. Dak has the best offensive line in football and great running game. Seattle built the system around Russell. Cam team runs the ball and when he is actually protected, even with sub-par weapons, at times he was the MVP. Now injuries play a big part like they always do. The new wave of quarterback has to protect themselves and play smart. That was something that plagued RG3 and Vick from the past. I am sure all 3 guys will get drafted relatively high despite the overrated combine; the thing is – opportunity has to match the system. If the new wave of quarterback is supported properly, you can change the narrative on African American quarterback play for good.
