UA-59049186-1 Packers 30, Bears 27 - Good if it Goes

Packers 30, Bears 27

Box Score

Grading Primer (I wrote this about Michigan, but the grading procedures are still relevant.)

The Bears hung with the Packers in the first half and went into halftime tied at 10. The third quarter went about as poorly as it could, with the Packers scoring 17 unanswered points. Then the comeback started. The Bears came all the way back to tie the game, then as if on cue, proceeded to give up a bomb that got Green Bay in field goal range. Crosby did not miss. This space is focusing on next year, so let’s get an idea of how everyone did.

Takeaways

Matt Barkley made a couple mistakes, but overall, played well. The interception he threw targeting Daniel Brown can’t happen. Brown was held, but even if he wasn’t, there were three Packers in the area and the throw sucked. The one where he was targeting Daniel Braverman still wasn’t great, but I put that more on Braverman laying an egg on the play. I still think Barkley should go into next year as the presumptive starter, unless the Bears can bring in Tony Romo or a QB falls into their lap in the second round of the draft.

Jordan Howard didn’t have a ton of room to run, but found ways to make plays. He continues to look like a star in the making.

Alshon Jeffery had a drop in his return from suspension, then went untargeted for quite a while, then was targeted quite a bit and was instrumental in getting the Bears back in the game. Pay the man. Cameron Meredith had a very nice game, as did Deonte Thompson. Jeffery, Kevin White, Meredith, and Thompson could make a very formidable receiving group in 2017.

Daniel Brown was fine. That does not change the outlook that if he’s needed to be a contributor in 2017, the team is not in trouble at the tight end position. Ben Braunecker was solid in limited action.

Josh Sitton had an excellent game against his former team. Cody Whitehair continued to build upon his excellent rookie year. Ted Larsen was just okay. Charles Leno, Jr. was better than his grade suggests – pass pro was pretty good from him. Bobby Massie did not seem to know what time the game started. After a terrible start, he managed to reach mediocrity as the game went on. When all was said and done, this went down as his eighth straight game grading out negatively. Of the thirteen games he’s played in this year, he’s graded out negatively in 10 of them. Not good. He can’t be a starter on next year’s line.

The defensive line didn’t have a particularly good day. C.J. Wilson was solidly positive and that’s in. Mitch Unrein and Akiem Hicks both made it above zero, but neither was anything to write home about.

Pernell McPhee played very well and put serious pressure on Aaron Rodgers. Leonard Floyd didn’t produce the way people thought he would going into the game, but he was solid nonetheless. Nick Kwiatkoski had a really lousy game. The defensive unit as a whole missed way too many tackles Kwiatkoski contributed to that number quite a bit. John Timu looked better during film review than he did live, but that still was rather lousy.

Last week, I said Cre’Von LeBlanc was looking like a solid piece for next year. I should not have said that. He was awful even before getting torched on the bomb. Vic Fangio said that LeBlanc shouldn’t be blamed for giving up that play as there should have been help. There absolutely should have been help, but even so, LeBlanc biffed that one majorly. Also awful – Tracy Porter. Particularly good – nobody. So, yeah, the secondary should be a major concern this off-season.

#FireJohnFox Status: Lean to keep.

The team still hasn’t quit. And they’ve been banged up. That said, the team not quitting is not, in and of itself, a reason to not fire someone.

#FireDowellLoggains Status: Keep, unless you can get someone better.

Fire anyone else status: Still just Jeff Rodgers.

If you have an idea of what I should call this, let me know. Twitter handle and e-mail address are at the end of the blog.

Anyway, up to 3 may be awarded per player. Not necessarily the highest-graded players since different grades mean different things to different players (refer to the primer).
