UA-59049186-1 Avalanche 2, Blackhawks 1 (OT) - Good if it Goes

Avalanche 2, Blackhawks 1 (OT)

Box score (Yahoo)

The Blackhawks out-shot the Avalanche and got some good looks, but were unable to beat a struggling Colorado team. The Hawks didn’t get a ton of shots early, but one could see that they were playing hard and as the period went on, that work began to materialize. However, neither team would light the lamp in the period. In the second, the Hawks would take the lead on a Jonathan Toews goal at the end of a power play, ending his 13-game goal drought. The goal came just under 12 minutes in and was the only one in the period. The Avalanche would tie the game 5:42 into the third on a goal Mikko Rantanen. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but no goals. On the other end, Corey Crawford came up big for the Hawks to keep the game tied and we would head to overtime tied at 1. Overtime didn’t last very long, as a Patrick Kane turnover lead to a Nathan McKinnon game-winner.

A few things

  • Artem Anisimov was paced on IR retroactive to December 18. Tanner Kero was called up from Rockford to take his place.
  • Marian Hossa was still out with an upper-body injury.
  • Corey Crawford didn’t seem to have much rust; he made several great saves.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (1 G)

★★ Nathan McKinnon, C, COL (1 G (GWG), 1 A)

Calvin Pickard, G, COL (38 SV, 1 GA)
