Blackhawks 2, Blues 1 (OT) – Recap

The Blackhawks and Blues played a very back-and-forth game Wednesday night. The Blues were more physical, but the Hawks did a good job of generating offense and getting good looks. After a scoreless first period, Marian Hossa lit the lamp early in the second to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Following the Hossa goal, we saw more back-and-forth action, with both teams getting good looks and both goaltenders making big saves. Each team had their penalty kill operating efficiently; the Blues have been one of the NHL’s best in that department and the Hawks have ironed their kinks out. Late in the third, Alex Pietrangelo scored to tie the game at 1. Not long after that, though, he would take a delay of game penalty and give the Hawks a chance to take a late lead on a power play. The St. Louis penalty killers did their jobs, though, and got the game to overtime. The final 24 seconds of the Pietrangelo penalty carried over into the OT period. A second after the penalty ended, Artemi Panarin beat Jake Allen to give the Hawks the extra point.

A few things

  • Turns out Panarin can fight. He got into it with Scottie Upshall and got the better of him.
  • Artem Anisimov‘s 11-game point streak came to an end as he left the game with an upper-body injury. He’s day-to-day.
  • Corey Crawford was excellent in this one. The one goal that did get through maybe wasn’t the best one to give up, but he had multiple ten-bell saves.

My picks for 3 stars

★★★ Jake Allen, G, STL (28 SV, 2 GA)

★★ Corey Crawford, G, CHI (27 SV, 1 GA)

★ Artemi Panarin, LW, CHI (1 G (GWG), 1 A, Gordie Howe hat trick)
