Blackhawks 4, Islanders 1 – Recap

The Hawks were back on home ice Tuesday night to take on the New York Islanders. The Hawks dominated most of the first period, getting plenty of opportunities in their offensive end and limiting the Islanders’ chances. The Hawks got the game’s first goal just over seven minutes into the game after Jonathan Toews threw the puck at the net and it ricocheted in off of Michal Neuvirth. The Hawks would keep on controlling the action after the goal, save for a couple nice possessions by the Islanders. Nobody would score, though, until Toews lit the lamp for the second time in the game, flipping a backhanded shot over Neuvirth’s shoulder and into the net just over sixteen minutes in. This would be the last goal scored in the period, and the Hawks would take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The start of the second period saw back-and-forth action by the two teams. The Islanders would get the game’s first power play five-and-a-half minutes into the period after Andrew Shaw committed an incredibly stupid penalty, head butting Brock Nelson, resulting in a five-minute major and a game misconduct. The Hawks were excellent on the penalty kill, limiting the Islanders to one shot, which was kept out of the net, in five minutes.

The Islanders would put together a couple nice possessions in their offensive end, but would come away empty on them. The game’s next goal would come from Marian Hossa just under fourteen minutes into the period. The Islanders would get a few more chances the rest of the period, but they would all be denied by Corey Crawford, and after forty, the Hawks led 3-0.

Less than a minute into the third period, the Hawks expanded their lead when Hossa scored his second goal of the night. Just under five-and-a-half minutes into the period, Nikolay Kulemin would score for the Islanders and cut the Hawks’ lead to three. A little over a minute-and-a-half later, the Islanders would get a power play after Marian Hossa was sent off Calvin de Haan. The Hawks were able to kill off the penalty.

The Hawks would get a power play of their own, their first of the game, 11:22 into the period after John Tavares was sent off for holding Patrick Sharp’s stick. The Hawks would come up empty on the man advantage and had to prevent a couple Islanders’ chances during the two minutes. Both teams would have chances the rest of the game, but neither would score, and the Hawks would win 4-1.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Patrick Sharp, LW, CHI (2 A)

★★ Marian Hossa, RW, CHI (2 G)

★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (2 G (GWG), 2 A)
