Blackhawks Sign Nick Schmaltz
- Updated: June 21, 2016
Sunday, the Blackhawks signed C prospect Nick Schmaltz to a 3-year deal. Once the Hawks traded Teravainen to Carolina, it seemed a lot more likely that Schmaltz would sign because it became a lot more likely that he would make the NHL team this year. This past season for North Dakota, Schmaltz had 46 points (11 G, 35 A) in 37 games and was a +44 as part of the Hawks’ CBS line. Schmaltz is a a solid two-way forward with very good vision and passing ability. 35 assists in 37 games do not happen by accident. Think “middle class man’s Jonathan Toews.” Schmaltz would be a great fit with sniper Tyler Motte. As for the left wing on that line – Hinostroza’s the first name that jumps out at me. If that does, in fact, end up being the Hawks’ third line, they could certainly do worse.
