Coyotes 3, Blackhawks 2 (SO) – Recap
- Updated: February 10, 2015
After a seven road trip on which the Blackhawks went 4-3, they were finally back on home ice to face the team they played the last time they were on home ice, the Arizona Coyotes. The Hawks controlled the action early on, but weren’t able to find the back of the net, thanks in part to a couple nice saves by Arizona goaltender Mike Smith. The Hawks would get the game’s first power play 8:17 in, when Michael Stone was sent to the penalty box for a high stick on Daniel Carcillo. The Hawks had a tough time getting anything organized, and the best scoring chance during the Hawks man advantage came from Arizona, but a good defensive play by Duncan Keith and a save by Antti Raanta kept the game 0-0. After their return to even strength, the Coyotes would pick up their play and get a couple chances, one of which required a very nice save by Raanta. The Coyotes’ control of the game would be short-lived, though, as the Hawks would get the momentum back and challenge Mike Smith a few more times before the period ended. And the end of one, the teams had combined for 22 shots (13 by Chicago, 9 by Arizona), but no goals.
The Hawks got off to a slower start in the second than they did in the first, with the Coyotes getting the better chances early on. Raanta made all the necessary saves, though, and the game remained tied at 0. The Hawks picked up their play as time went on, and the two teams began trading chances, though nothing resulted in a goal. The Hawks would continue to pick up their play, eventually swinging momentum totally in their favor, and then headed to the power play for the second time in the game when Michael Stone was sent to the penalty box for the second time in the game, this time for hooking Brad Richards. The Hawks did much better on the man advantage this time around, getting a couple good chances, but nothing got past Smith and the game would remain tied at zero.
The Hawks would get the game’s first goal 12:44 into the period when Marian Hossa scored his third goal in two games, chipping a pass from Jonathan Toews passed Mike Smith and into the net. The Hawks would continue to control the action until Patrick Kane was sent off for a brainless unsportsmanlike conduct penalty just under 17 minutes into the period. The Coyotes would capitalize on the penalty, tying the game a little under seventeen-and-a-half minutes into the period, when Shane Doan tipped a shot past Raanta. The Hawks would make things worse for themselves not long after, when Johnny Oduya was sent off for cross checking. The Hawks would successfully kill this penalty off, though, and the remaining few seconds of the period would run off without a change in the score, and we would head to the second intermission tied at 1.
After about four minutes of good back-and-forth action, the Coyotes took their first lead of the night when Antoine Vermette redirected a shot by Oliver Ekman-Larsson over the right shoulder of Raanta. Not long after, the Hawks would head to the power play when Ekman-Larsson was sent off a slash on Toews. The Hawks would have a couple chances on the power play, but nothing got past Smith and the Coyotes retained their 2-1 lead. The Coyotes did a great job of limiting opportunities for the Blackhawks on the power play, and kept up this trend when the game returned to even strength. While the Hawks may have controlled the puck more, they were seldom able to do anything with it.
The Hawks finally got a good chance 12:18 into the third and capitalized on it, when for the second time on the night, Jonathan Toews fed Marian Hossa, who lit the lamp for the second time in the game, and the fourth in his last two. The Hawks would play well the rest of the way, but the Coyotes would limit their scoring chances, and Smith would keep the puck out of the net on the chances they did get. After sixty minutes, the teams were tied at two, and for the second time in as many days, the Hawks would head to overtime.
The Hawks controlled the action early in overtime, with the Coyotes unable to contain the Hawks as well in the 4-on-4 as they did in the 5-on-5. Just under two minutes in, the Hawks would get a great chance, with Saad and Hossa heading to the net on a 2-on-1, but Saad’s pass jumped just over Hossa’s stick. During the play, though, Martin Erat held Brandon Saad and the Hawks would go on the power play. The Coyotes would turn in another great penalty kill to keep the game knotted at two.
With overtime winding down, the Hawks got a couple great chances, first with a shot by Andrew Shaw that appeared to be a goal, but was waved off, and then a shot by Saad that hit the post. The clock would hit zero for overtime, at which point we would go to Toronto to determine if we would need a shootout or if Shaw’s shot did in fact cross the goal line. After the review, the original call was upheld, and we would go to a shootout.
In the first round of the shootout, Lucas Lessio beat Raanta and Smith stopped Toews.
In round two, Ekman-Larsson was stopped by Raanta and Patrick Kane, making his first positive contribution of the night, beat Mike Smith.
In round three, Vermette beat Raanta and Smith stopped Sharp to give the Coyotes the extra point.
After this one, I have a few questions:
1. Why was it Kane, who had done nothing to that point, other than drawing a bonehead penalty that led to an Arizona goal, instead of Hossa, who had scored both Hawks goals, with Toews on the top line in the 4-on-4? This was especially weird to me since both Hossa goals were set up by Toews.
2. What in the world was the NHL looking at on the review of Shaw’s shot? It sure looked to me like the puck crossed the line.
3. Why did we not see Marian Hossa during the shootout? Again, he had both Hawks goals.
Anyway…
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Jonathan Toews, C, CHI (2 A)
★★ Oliver Ekman-Larsson, D, ARI (2 A)
★ Marian Hossa, RW, CHI (2 G)
