Good Riddance: Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac, Monster Enablers

Yesterday, the report on the investigation of the Blackhawks organization’s handling of a sexual assault by a former coach against a former player came out and, as a result, Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac are out as well. Rocky and Danny Wirtz issued a statement:

The full report is here. “Difficult to read” is an understatement. This was a failure by the organization on multiple levels; they not only failed to protect their players, they failed to get this monster out of sports and then he went on to molest a minor at his next job at a high school in Michigan. Bowman issued a statement:
Stan Bowman: “I relied on the direction of my superior that he would take appropriate action. Looking back, now knowing he did not handle the matter promptly, I regret assuming he would do so.” pic.twitter.com/yxbFQQ0AKR

Just flat-out tone-deaf. Why he was allowed to “step aside” is beyond me. He should have been fired long ago for being bad at his job. The only Cup he deserves the lion’s share of the credit for is the one in 2015 and his handling of the roster since then has been a disaster.
John McDonough, Jay Blunk, and Jim Gary were already gone. Kevin Cheveldayoff is now the GM in Winnipeg. Joel Quenneville is the coach in Florida. Cheveldayoff and Quenneville are going to meet with commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss the findings. Some are already calling for their jobs. Your author’s interpretation of the report is that McDonough, Bowman, MacIsaac, and Grary definitely knew the full details of what was going on. None of those guys should work in sports again. Cheveldayoff and Quenneville have some plausible deniability here; Quenneville in particular seemed to be convinced that McDonough was handling the situation. That said, Quenneville comes off pretty tone-deaf in the report and clearly lied when he said he wasn’t aware of anything going on until the lawsuit was filed. I’ll reserve judgment until the two men meet with Bettman. I can understand whatever Winnipeg and Florida decide to do in the interim.
