Rangers 1, Blackhawks 0 (OT) – Recap
- Updated: March 9, 2015
Sunday night saw an Original Six matchup on the West Side of Chicago, with the New York Rangers coming to town to take on the Blackhawks. The game started out with a few minutes of back-and-forth play before the Hawks went to the power play after Marc Staal hooked Brandon Saad. The Hawks would come away empty on the power play, getting one shot in the process. The Hawks held on to the momentum for a while after the power play had ended, although as time went on, momentum began to gradually shift toward the Rangers, and eventually it had swung completely in their favor. However, Corey Crawford stopped every shot the Rangers took.
The Hawks would be able to swing momentum back in their favor with a couple nice possessions in their offensive zone. The Hawks would get another power play when Derek Stepan hooked Teuvo Teräväinen, and for some reason, Chris Kreider was sent to the penalty box. This power play would be as uneventful as the first. Both teams would have chances the rest of the way, but neither would score, and after twenty, we were as we began.
The Hawks got out to a good start in the second period and got the period’s first power play when the Rangers were called for having too many men 6:19 into the period. While the Hawks would put together a solid possession on the man advantage, they were again unable to score, and the game remained 0-0. The Rangers would get their first power play 10:44 into the period when Andrew Shaw was sent off for hooking. The Rangers would test the Hawks’ penalty kill, but the Hawks were able to kill off the penalty. The Hawks would get their fourth power play of the night after Dominic Moore was sent off for interfering with Teräväinen with 2:39 to play in the period. As was the case with the previous three, the Hawks came away empty. Nobody scored in the 39 seconds of 5-on-5 play that succeeded the Hawks’ man advantage, and after two periods, the game was still tied at 0.
Both teams played in the first half of the third, though the Hawks were a little better, getting some nice looks. Neither team would be able to light the lamp, though. The Rangers would take the momentum away from the Hawks, though, and get a few great looks, but Crawford made even better saves to keep the game 0-0. The Rangers would get a power play with 2:38 left in the period after the Hawks were called for having too many men on the ice, but the Hawks were able to kill it off. Nobody scored in the final 38 seconds of regulation, and we would head to overtime.
In overtime, Derick Brassard beat Crawford with a shot a goalie of his pay grade needs to stop to give the Rangers the extra point. The goal came 42 seconds in.
My picks for 3 stars:
★★★ Mats Zuccarello, RW, NYR (1 A)
★★ Derick Brassard, C, NYR (1 G (GWG))
★ Cam Talbot, G, NYR (29 SV, 0 GA)
