Stanley Cup Final, Game 2: Lightning 4, Blackhawks 3 – Recap

Saturday night, the Hawks were again in Tampa, looking to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. The beginning of the game was back-and-forth, with both teams getting nice looks. Just as they did in game 1, the Lightning struck first, the goal coming 12:56 into the game from Cedric Paquette. After claiming the early lead, the Lightning controlled the action, though the Hawks would manage to get a couple looks. The Hawks would go to the penalty kill 18:28 into the first after Johnny Oduya was sent off for tripping. Nobody scored in the remaining 1:32, and after one, the Hawks trailed 1-0 and the Lightning would have 28 seconds of power play time waiting for them in the second.

The Hawks would be able to kill off the remainder of the Oduya penalty. The Hawks tied the game 3:05 into the second on a goal by Andrew Shaw. The Hawks would go to the power play 4:26 into the period after Alex Killorn was sent off for hooking. The Hawks converted 54 seconds in on a goal by Teuvo Teräväinen. The Lightning tied the game 6:52 into the period on a deflection by Nikita Kucherov. The Hawks would go to the power play 9:24 into the period after Braydon Coburn was sent off for holding. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but come away empty. After a lot of fast, back-and-forth hockey, the Lightning re-took the lead 13:58 into the period on a goal that Corey Crawford just can’t allow. It was Tyler Johnson sneaking the puck in behind Crawford. Though both teams would have chances, neither would score the rest of the way in the second, and after two periods, the Hawks trailed 3-2.

The Hawks got off to a good start in the third period and tied the game 3:38 into the period. Just under five minutes into the period, the Hawks would go to the penalty kill after Patrick Sharp was sent off for slashing. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. Shortly after, Sharp would go back to the penalty box, this time for high-sticking. At the beginning of the penalty, Andrei Vasilevskiy came in for the Lightning, replacing Ben Bishop. The Lightning would convert 8:49 into the period on a goal by Jason Garrison. After the goal, Bishop came back in, his brief absence likely due to an equipment issue. Vasilevskiy would come back in 12:19 into the period as Bishop went back to the locker room. The Hawks would go to the power play 49 seconds later after Andrej Sustr was sent off for delay of game. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks, but no goals. With just over two minutes to play, the Hawks pulled Crawford in favor of the extra attacker. The Hawks would be unable to score and the Lightning would take game 2 by a score of 4-3.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Andrew Shaw, F, CHI (1 G)

★★ Nikita Kucherov, RW, TB ( 1 G, 1 A)
