Western Conference Final, Game 6: Blackhawks 5, Ducks 2 – Recap

With their season on the line, the Hawks were back on home ice Wednesday for game six of the Western Conference Final. Just under two minutes into the game, the Hawks went to the penalty kill after having too many men on the ice. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. The Hawks would get their first power play 7:06 into the game when Corey Perry was sent off for hooking. The Hawks would get a couple nice shots, but no goals. The rest of the period saw back-and-forth action, with neither team scoring, so after twenty, we were as we began.

The beginning of the second saw more back-and-forth action. Just under five minutes into the period, the Hawks went to the power play as Jiri Sekac was sent off for elbowing. The Hawks would struggle to get anything going and would come away empty. The Hawks would get the game’s first goal 8:23 into the period on a breakaway by Brandon Saad, set up by a nice play by Duncan Keith. The Hawks would expand the lead to 2-0 1:18 later on a goal by Marian Hossa, again set up by Keith. The Hawks would make it 3-0 1:27 later on a goal by Patrick Kane. Brad Richards would be sent off for hooking 14:06 into the period and the Ducks would convert seven seconds into the power play on a goal by Patrick Maroon. The Hawks would go to the power play 16:04 into the period after Ryan Kesler was sent off for tripping. The Hawks would again come away empty. Nobody would score in the final 1:56, and after forty, the Hawks led 3-1.

The Ducks controlled the action early in the third and cut the lead to two 1:57 in on a goal by Clayton Stoner. The Hawks would go to the penalty kill 3:15 into the period after Andrew Desjardins was sent off for goalie interference. The Hawks would be able to kill off the penalty. The Ducks would maintain control of the action, though. The Hawks would get a couple nice looks and capitalize on one of them to put the lead back to two. It was one Andrew from another; Shaw from Desjardins 16:28 into the period. With just under two-and-a-half minutes to play, the Ducks pulled Frederik Andersen in favor of the extra attacker. With 49 seconds to play, Shaw scored an empty net goal to make it 5-2 Hawks, which would be the final, as the Hawks forced game 7.

My picks for 3 stars:

★★★ Andrew Desjardins, F, CHI (2 A)

★★ Andrew Shaw, F, CHI (2 G)
