Player Grades
The grading scale goes from -2 to +2, in half-point increments, for each play. Screens are graded as runs. Penalties are counted in whatever phase they were committed. Pre- and post-snap penalties are in the “Misc.” column. “Short” throws are less than 15 yards, “Deep” is over 15 or more. Everything else (scrambles, throwaways, reads, etc.) is under “Miscellaneous.” Parentheses in a column denote grades/snaps from the opposite side of the ball and are not included in grades/snaps from the player’s usual side. Snap counts are from Pro Football Reference. Box score and other relevant info can be found at that link as well.
Note: I’ll get around to the Saints film review. I thought I should do this one first. Again, make this a decent-paying gig and I’ll put out more blogs. You can help by following Qwality Sports on social media, subscribing on YouTube, and watching the channel. All that’s free. If you feel like donating a few bucks, my Cashapp and Venmo are $KSchroeder312. If you have a business and would like to advertise on the blog or the channel, hit up @Q3_Media on Twitter.
“I thought the chart would look worse.”
So, here were the problems:
1 . Caleb was okay, but that’s all. The pick was bad. The miss at the end of the game in the end zone was D.J.’s fault. Most of the day was solid, but unspectacular. I feel like he’s playing too tight, too afraid of making mistakes. When he just let loose when they were down two scores, he looked better and more comfortable. One nickel says that when he’s more comfortable in the offense as a whole, he’ll look like that all the time. Notice that says “when.” He will get there. It does take more than seven games, though.
2. Run blocking outside of Wright was meh to bad. This contributes to problem 1 because it limits the effectiveness of play action.
3. Continued dumb penalties.
4. Issues 1-3 resulted in field goals instead of touchdowns. We need touchdowns.
5. The top 3 corners were hurt. The three guys they put out there stink, but that’s why they’re guys 4-6 and why Dennis Allen opted to stick another LB or DT on the field whenever he could instead of staying in nickel.
6. The pass rush sucks, even when in a Bear front, and this is a particularly big problem, given issue number 3. They can’t get pressure without bringing extra guys and that puts extra stress on the jabroni brigade on the back end, and those guys can’t handle regular stress, much less extra.
7. Run defense outside of Sweat and Dexter was meh to lousy.
8. Cairo Santos can’t hit from distances many other kickers in the league today can. It’s time to go to Moody. I know we might have some lingering PTSD after we let Gould go and then wandered the kicker desert, but there needs to be a new kicker here next year regardless. Let’s find out if Moody can be the guy. We can’t keep going about this needing 10 more yards than everyone else to get points.
9. Officiating blew. On the critical 1st down completion to DeAndre Hopkins, Hopkins pushed off and got a hold of Nahshon Wright’s facemask. Not calling offensive pass interference is understandable – I’ve seen far worse not get called. Not calling an obvious facemask is ridiculous. On the interception by Caleb Williams, it looked like Colston Loveland got held. It looked like he got interfered with on a target on the Bears’ next drive, too.
Monsters
Darnell Wright had what I believe is the best score of any offensive lineman I’ve graded in the decade of doing this between Bears and Michigan games. Odunze was very good. Would’ve been nice if he could’ve caught the one on the sideline, but he made the ones he must make. Loveland was strong with Kmet out. Sweat and Dexter were both good.
