WWE Night of Champions 2015 Review

Kevin Owens defeated Ryback to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Ryback got the heat on Owens to start the match, but Owens came back and worked Ryback’s arm. As expected with any Ryback match, there were a lot of holds. Owens carried the match and did as well as he could, but you can only do so much with Steroid Guy.

Finish: Ryback went for Shell Shock, but Owens raked his eyes unbeknownst to the referee. Owens then rolled Ryback up and pinned him.

★★½

Dolph Ziggler defeated Rusev

I guess Dolph is the face here. I have no idea why. The match went back-and-forth early, then Rusev got the heat on Dolph. Dolph made a comeback, then the match went back-and-forth again. Rusev hit a superkick, but Dolph kicked out. Rusev thought he had won. The ref’s hand didn’t hit the mat a third time and there was no bell, so I don’t know why he thought that. Things only got worse from there.

Finish: Summer Rae tried to interfere and ended up in the ring. The ref ejected her. Summer threw a shoe up the ramp, then tried to throw her other shoe at the ref. The ref moved and she hit Rusev, so this should have been a DQ. But since that wasn’t the finish, Dolph hit the Zig-Zag and won.

The Dudley Boyz defeated The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston, with Xavier Woods) by disqualification in a match for the WWE Tag Team Championship

This was a pretty good match. Xavier was very entertaining at ringside. The Dudleys had the advantage early, but then New Day came back and got the heat on the Dudleys. The Dudleys then came back and re-took control.

Finish: The Dudleys hit the 3D on Kofi, but Xavier broke up the pin, causing the DQ. After the match, Xavier got a table and Big E and Kofi were going to put the Dudleys through it, but the Dudleys turned the tables on New Day and put Xavier through it.

Charlotte defeated Nikki Bella to win the WWE Divas Championship

Charlotte hurt her knee early in the match, so Nikki got the heat on her by working it. This went on forever. The crowd, despite Paige and Becky’s attempts to pump them up, lost interest. I did, too. Paige and Becky took out Brie and Alicia Fox to keep them from interfering. Of course, the stipulation here was that if Nikki lost in any way, including countout or DQ, Charlotte becomes champion. So this was stupid.

Finish: Nikki went to take out Charlotte’s leg from the second rope, but Charlotte speared her. Charlotte then applied the Figure Eight and Nikki tapped out.

The only way this match was going to be any good was if Charlotte carried it. Since Charlotte was getting the crap beaten out of her for the entire match up until the finish, they were counting on Nikki Bella to carry the match and it was very clear very fast that she has even fewer moves than her boyfriend.

As for Charlotte winning the title – who cares? Sure I’m happy for her winning it and her celebrating with Ric was a great moment, but Nikki basically said on Raw that the title doesn’t matter – only holding it for a long time does when she celebrated getting to keep the title and break the record for longest reign even after Stephanie announced the stipulation for this match. Vince basically said the whole divas division doesn’t matter when he decided that spiting A.J. Lee was more important than creating new female stars and highlighting actual wrestling in the division.

The match sucked, but again, I’m happy for Ric and Ashley Flair and Nikki remembered which leg to work, so at least there was that.

-★★★★

The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Braun Strowman) defeated Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns, and Chris Jericho

On the pre-show, Corey Graves hypothesized that Ambrose and Reigns’ mystery partner was going to be Samoa Joe, so I was pretty disappointed when Jericho’s music hit. We saw a good, back-and-forth match with plenty of action. Strowman was made to look dominant, but Ambrose and Reigns had him on the ropes before Jericho tagged himself in.

Finish: Jericho went for the Codebreaker, but Strowman caught him and slammed him down, then made him pass out to a bear hug.

★★★¼

John Cena defeated Seth Rollins to win the WWE United States Championship

This was a very good back-and-forth match with both men trading big moves, trying to gain the upper hand. Cena would try something and Rollins would counter. Then Rollins would try something and Cena would counter. Rollins really brings the best out of Cena; this was another excellent match between these two.

Finish: Cena hit a leg drop off the top, then the AA and pinned Rollins. After the match, Rollins tried to leave, so Cena hit an AA on Rollins outside the ring and threw Rollins back in.

★★★★¼

Seth Rollins defeated Sting to retain WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Sting was in control over the worn-out Rollins until Rollins pushed Sting through the Spanish announce table. He thought about walking away and taking the countout loss, but then decided to fight the injured Icon. Sting was eventually able to make a comeback, though. Sting had to be examined by the ringside doctor, but was able to continue.

Finish: Sting locked in the Scorpion Death Lock, but Rollins reached the ropes. Sting went for it again, but Rollins countered and pinned him with a roll-up.

★★★½

After the match, Sheamus came out and hit Rollins with a Brogue Kick. Sheamus went to cash in the Money in the Bank, but Kane came out with the mask and chokeslammed both Rollins and Sheamus, then tombstoned Rollins.

Overall: Either have Rollins lose both titles or retain both titles, and if you really want to make him look good, have him beat Sheamus, too. I would’ve had Sting win the title. Then either immediately after or the next night on Raw, have Sheamus cash in and win the title. Rollins can feud with Triple H and Triple H can get over about how he actually beat Sting. The Rollins – Sting match itself was still pretty good, though.

Rollins and Cena had a great match, and everything else outside of the divas match and the Rusev – Ziggler finish was at least okay.
