What’s Going On Says “What’s Going On?”

Hello, and welcome to a new feature called “What’s Going On.” Here, we’ll look at stories mostly from around the world of sports, but if I see something outside the world of sports that I decide I want to talk about, I reserve the right to do so here. Let’s begin.

William Ryan Retires

Wisconsin basketball coach William Ryan, whose nickname I took away last season when I decided he was a putz and didn’t deserve to share a name with Bo Schembechler retired last week. He wanted to give longtime assistant Greg Gard a shot as head coach and Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez said they intended to take a look around before hiring someone when Ryan retired after the season, so this looked to be the only way Ryan could guarantee that Gard would get a shot as head coach. I’ve seen people praise Ryan for being loyal to Gard and I get that. I’ve heard people rip Ryan for taking matters into his own hands to give Gard a shot and I get that, too. But, like, is anyone gonna point out how this is unfair to the players? You know, the people who really matter in all of this. Wisconsin was going nowhere fast this year, but the players deserve better than to get caught up in the middle of this.

Also, I will give Mike Krzyzewski $20 if he does an interview saying “I don’t quit on my team in the middle of the season. And that’s okay if other people do that, but I like being there for my players. It’s just the way I am.”

Multiple Aggie QBs decide to transfer

Two weeks ago, Kyle Allen announced that he’s going to transfer. Last week, Kyler Murray said he’s going to do likewise. That makes 5 QBs that have transferred from Texas A&M since 2012. Matt Davis transferred to Tyler Junior College before ending up at SMU, Matt Joeckel and Kenny Hill both transferred to TCU.

Allen and Murray transferred with concerns over the offense and who’s going to be coaching it. Kevin Sumlin didn’t offer any clarity on the offensive situation. With this mess, his seat looks to be getting pretty warm.

Steve Harvey botches ending of beauty pageant

I know it’s not sports, but this is hysterical. Not for Miss Columbia. That’s got to suck for her. And it’s got to suck for Miss Philippines. What should have been a big moment for her was turned into an incredibly awkward one. But the look on Steve’s face when he realizes what he just did is hysterical. (About 2:28 mark.)
