It’s 1 A.M. as I write this. I’ve spent all day looking for the right words to say and there just aren’t any words to say, so I’m just going to put down what’s rolling around in my head and hope it makes sense.
How you make sense of this, though, I have no idea.
If you follow me or some other members of the Madden community or other gamers of any kind, you’ll notice a profile picture featuring two men, Taylor “SpotMePlzzz” Robertson and Elijah “Trueboy” Clayton. Those two men are dead because an unstable lunatic had access to a gun and after losing a game in the Jacksonville Madden tournament, came back and shot the place up. I’m not going to mention the shooter’s name, because, as DrLupo so eloquently and perfectly put it during his Fortnite stream Sunday night, F that guy. People on Twitter, stop using his name. Stop sharing his picture. F that guy. The only thing the world needs to know about him is that he was a complete and total loser.
This country has a gun problem. Period. Two of the best guys in our community are gone because this country can’t get its act together and AT THE VERY LEAST agree that lunatics should not have access to firearms. Things like this happen time and time and time and time and time and time again and the best half the supposed greatest country on Earth can muster is “thoughts and prayers.” Take your thoughts and prayers and stick them. They’re clearly not working. Either there’s nobody up there or the guy’s asleep at the wheel or just doesn’t care and no matter which of the three it is, the outcome for us is the same. It’s up to us to take action. Stop looking to the sky for answers and actually do something. And if you’re okay with this country’s current gun laws, you can explain to Taylor’s son why he’s going to grow up without his father and then you can go to hell.
So where do we go from here? For future tournaments, extra security should be in place. For the country, hopefully some sanity comes in November. For the gaming community, play on. Play on because that’s how you honor Eli and Taylor. Play on because F that guy. He doesn’t get to win. And remember how everyone in Madden community, the gaming community as a whole, and really, the entire Internet came together in the aftermath of this tragedy. This can be a great place when we use it for good. So let’s do that. Be kind to one another.
Play on.
R.I.P. Taylor “SpotMePlzzz” Robertson and Elijah “Trueboy” Clayton
