Jerry Rice: No Longer my Hero

My Hero, no more.

“Can’t we all just get along”

Jerry Rice decided to use these words in a Twitter statement to “patriotically” reprimand Colin Kaepernick publicly. Another man uttered the exact same words dealing with issues that Kaepernick is protesting in his fight vs injustice today.

How could an educated successful black man not see the irony of quoting Rodney King while stating all lives matter and disagreeing with Kap?

In the words of my bro Jon Kirkland, it’s the “plight of the affluent negro.” In the 40’s-60’s, African-American didn’t have anything to lose in protest so it was easier to risk your wellbeing for the cause. To stop and make a stand for what’s right. In today’s society, these successful black people refuse to speak, afraid of the backlash undoing what made them successful. It is only further setting your people behind. Choosing to speak up when it’s beneficial and avoiding the social issues in the world today.

Jerry acknowledges that there is a problem when he said, “So much going on in the world today. Can we all just get along!” but never truly speaks up on the issues that are going on. He sold out for the shield, he sold out for what eventually would become beneficial to him and he sold out his people. All lives do matter, and nobody has ever said they didn’t, but right now we’re trying to bring attention to the injustices perpetrated by the judicial system against African American men and woman.

Jerry Rice will always be the greatest Wide Receiver to ever live. He’s the reason I decided to put a helmet on and play past grade school. But my hero he can no longer be. I don’t expect everybody to share my values, but I don’t expect them to put their people behind them and not focus on what’s wrong with the world today, to continue to turn a blind eye.

They always say it’s best if you never meet your heroes. I wish mine never opened his damn mouth.
