Bears Trim Roster, Cut Gould, Sign Sitton
- Updated: September 6, 2016
This past weekend, NFL teams made their cuts; let’s take a look at some of the Bears’ bigger moves.
- Pernell McPhee was placed on the PUP list. Still no word on how long he could be out.
- TEs Tony Moeaki and Rob Housler, RB Jacquizz Rodgers, and WR Marc Mariani were all let go.
- LS Patrick Scales was cut. Two days later, Aaron Brewer was cut and Scales was brought back. Just thought that was funny.
- The Bears claimed C Eric Kush (tank top guy) off waivers from L.A.
- The Bears waived TE Khari Lee after signing Logan Paulsen, who was a surprise cut by Washington. tWWL spelled Paulsen’s name wrong.
- DE Ego Ferguson was let go.
- QB David Fales was cut.
- WR Daniel Braverman, LB John Timu, TE Ben Braunecker, QB Matt Barkley, and C Cornelius Edison ended up on the practice squad.
Now for the big items. Robbie Gould was let go. Mike Wilbon said this:
But in December, he had said this:
h/t @CoachBrema013 on that one. Also:
This has been “Why You Should Ignore Mike Wilbon”, part 1,086.
Gould had been struggling and he was making way too much to struggle like that. The team is bringing in Connor Barth to replace Gould; since 2010, Barth has missed once from inside of 40 and that was a blocked kick. Beyond that, he’s been very good and has a pretty good leg. Last year was less than great for Barth, but it’s reasonable to think that was a blip and not the norm. If it’s more than a blip, the floor for Barth is still “will make the kicks he needs to make.” Gould could not do that last year. He had a very nice career in Chicago, but it was time for the team to move on.
And the even bigger news – the Bears signed G Josh Sitton after the Packers cut him because reasons. I’m not going to question it, though. It looks like Cody Whitehair is going to move to C. I would’ve preferred to move Sitton, but to me, it’s pretty much “whatever, man.” John Fox said he thinks Whitehair’s best position is center. He was shaky in the preseason, but I’m sure they can work the kinks out. When you have a chance to sign a guy like Josh Sitton, you do that and worry about the rest later. More from Brad Biggs:
Josh Sitton on motivation to sign with #Bears: “It didn’t have anything to do with sticking it to the #Packers.”

Riiiiight. Nothing to do with it *nudge nudge wink wink* Even if sticking it to the Packers really had nothing to do with signing with the Bears, sticking it to the Packers is an awesome byproduct.
More Josh Sitton: “More familiar with the division, close to where I was. I like the weather up here. It’s too damn hot in the south.”
— Brad Biggs (@BradBiggs) September 5, 2016
And with that, Josh Sitton is my new favorite player.
One last thing:

I’m lovin’ it.
