Kings 4, Blackhawks 3 – Recap

The Hawks’ first game after the All-Star break saw them at the Staples Center to face the team they had split the previous two Western Conference Finals with. The Hawks got out to a strong start and Patrick Kane got the Hawks on the scoreboard first just under two minutes into the game. The Kings would capture the momentum and eventually tie the game when Jeff Carter scored a little under nine minutes in. The Hawks would get it back, though, when Kaner got on the score sheet for the second time on the night, this time with a perfect pass to Sharp who found the back of the net on a power play a little under twelve minutes in. The Hawks would control the action for the rest of the period, though the score would remain unchanged.

The second period began with the Hawks having 39 seconds of power play time remaining from a Dustin Brown hooking penalty, which the Kings would be able to kill off. Shortly after the Kings completed the kill, Joakim Nordstrom would be sent to the penalty box for holding, giving the Kings their first power play of the night. A usually strong Blackhawks penalty kill would end up giving up the power play goal here, though, as Jeff Carter scored his second of the night to tie the game. With that goal, Carter matched the total he had scored in his previous thirteen games. The remaining eighteen minutes of the period would see good back-and-forth, but no more goals, and we would head into the third tied at a pair a piece.

Andrew Shaw would put the Hawks ahead about two-and-a-half minutes into the third after a great drive through the middle of the ice and an even better pass from Teuvo Teräväinen. The Hawks would do a great job of controlling the action in the third, keeping Los Angeles from getting any really good scoring chances. However, after being held without a shot for about eight minutes, the Kings would finally get a good chance and would capitalize on it as Tyler Toffoli would even the game just under fourteen minutes into the third. The Hawks would have a couple good scoring chances but nothing got past Quick. The Kings would get their first lead of the night about sixteen-and-a-half minutes in when Anze Kopitar’s shot was tipped by Jake Muzzin and got past Corey Crawford. Muzzin’s goal would end up being the GWG.
