Michigan Hires Don Brown As Defensive Coordinator
- Updated: December 21, 2015
Michigan has hired Boston College Defensive Coordinator Don Brown to the same position. I hadn’t seen his name mentioned for the position, which is why he wasn’t covered in the breakdown of potential candidates. If I had seen his name mentioned, he would have been above Pruitt in the “Hire him now” group. Boston College’s defense was 3rd in the country in S&P+ this year. So you may be wondering why Boston College wasn’t better. For the answer, look at the other side of the ball. Boston College managed a whopping zero points against Wake Forest. That offense was 123rd in S&P+. The only schools worse were North Texas, Louisiana-Monroe, Central Florida, Charlotte, and Kent State. Those five teams won a combined eight games this year and three of those wins belonged to Kent State.
Unfortunately for Brown, that’s been a bit of a recurring theme.
Also a recurring theme for Brown, though: building great defenses at places that don’t generally get top recruits. So I’m excited to see what he can do at Michigan.
I’ve put in a request to @DGDestroys, who makes every snap videos of football games, for videos of BC’s defense. If he ends up making them, I’ll take a look at those and break down his schemes and how Michigan’s players should fit into the system. In the meantime, take a look at this great article about his defense from Football Study Hall. One thing from that article should really jump out:
“[Justin] Simmons’ versatility and range on the back end, either playing outstanding deep zone…or else playing man coverage on a slot, was probably undervalued in his 2nd team All-ACC recognition.”
Sounds an awful lot like Jabrill Peppers. This should be fun.
Go Blue!
