Ohio 42, Michigan 13 – Recap

Okay, let’s talk about it.

“Why?”

Because it’s my job here.

So, what happened?

For those of you still here, obviously, that was not pleasant. The guy I’m most mad at for the unpleasantness is somehow hosting a football radio show until he inevitably takes the Ball State job. The guy I’m second-most mad at for the unpleasantness is now the head coach at Maryland. Meanwhile, we have a new Dude as DC.

The 3-3-5 defense was a bad idea. I don’t know if it would have been a much better idea had Glasgow and/or Mone been available, but even if they were, it still probably would have been a pretty bad idea and the fact of the matter is they weren’t available and this was a bad idea. This was made worse by Durkin not recognizing that it was a bad idea and continuing to deploy that defense despite the fact that it was a bad idea.

Sorry, Joe

Joe Bolden, who took a lot of the blame from Twitter, wasn’t actually that bad. He was bad, but not that bad. Upon reviewing the film, it looked like the line hung the linebackers out to dry quite a bit.

“So should I be worried about the line going into next year?”

Nah. Michigan was out of true nose tackles and again, the 3-3-5 was a horrible idea.

Game Grades

(A “+” is awarded for a positive play, a “-” for a negative one. For big positive or negative plays, 2 “+” or “-“, respectively, may be given.)

How’d They Do?

(I think this is the way I’m going to evaluate the position groups next year. Next year, I’ll also keep a rolling grade throughout the year, but I’m not putting that in now because I’d have to figure out a conversion rate between “excited” and “worried,” and I just want to put this game in the past and focus on the bowl game, okay?)

QB: 6/10. Rudock was good until he got hurt. Speight was not good.

RB: 7/10. This is as high as it is because I’m including Peppers here. He was great. Smith was mostly okay, but did miss a couple holes. Drake Johnson didn’t see the field much.

WR: 9/10. Chesson had a great day. He dropped one from Speight that was way behind him, so if you want to ding him for that, I guess you can. I chose not to, and put that one on Speight. Darboh was okay.

TE: 4.5/10. Butt was a great receiver and just a meh blocker. Hill and Poggi were rough when they were on the field.

OL: 2/10. Bad. The lot of ‘em.

DL: 1/10. Worse. The way I grade games, the baseline for D-linemen is about +3, meaning that if a D-lineman who sees the field regularly grades out at +3, it means he was meh. Nobody got to meh. Nobody really got close to meh. Taco was a 0, everyone else, even the guys who weren’t on the field much, were in the minuses. The tackles lost a lot of battles, the ends did a lousy job of defending the option. Again, this seemed like more of an issue with scheming than talent.

LB: 3/10. Ben Gedeon actually looked pretty good on film. Everyone else was bad. Not “let’s have Twitter yell at them” bad, but bad.

CB: 8.5/10. Lewis was Lewis. Everyone else was fine. Clark got beat for a TD, but it was good coverage and just a better pass, so I’m not going to hold that against him.

S: 4/10. Wilson was bad. Everyone else was okay.

K: 9/10. Allen did kicker-type stuff well.

P: 9.5/10. O’Neill did punter-type stuff very well.

ST: 9/10. That was running into the kicker, not roughing. Also, they blocked a punt long after it mattered, so there’s that.
