Wildcats Break Losing Streak in Fayetteville

Since 2011 during the Coach Cal era, 23rd ranked Kentucky has lost every single game in Arkansas. Their losing streak in Fayetteville ended tonight as the Wildcats move to 14-4 on the season after a chippy 80-66 win over the Razorbacks. Arkansas’ full court press could not stop the Wildcats in transition or their front court on the offensive glass.

As stated, this game was chippy. Kentucky had multiple shot clock violations and opportunities for Arkansas to turn those turnovers into points at the other end. The Razorbacks stayed as tough as possible on defense in the first half but gave up early in the second half. Unfortunately, Arkansas’ stagnant offense was not able to keep up with Kentucky the entire game. Most of the Razorbacks’ points were earned at the free throw line and not in transition or on turnover opportunities.

Kentucky saw a lot of time at the line too. Sophomore point guard Tyer Ulis finished with a career high 24 points and was 14 of 15 from the free throw line. Freshman Skal Labissiere went to the line four times after attacking the offensive glass. Only two out of eight rotating Kentucky players did not make it to the free throw line at least once.

Overall, both teams struggled offensively in the first half. Kentucky found a better rhythm in the second half and took control of the game, scoring on fouls and finding the open man. Freshman Jamal Murray, the Wildcats leading scorer, struggled to find his rhythm in the first half but came roaring back in the second half and finished with 19 points. Ulis and Murray finished with 31 of Kentucky’s 44 points in the second half.

One thing Kentucky needs to improve on is their paint presence and keeping their big men consistent. Senior Alex Poythress, who has been fairly inconsistent in his play against SEC teams, came out attacking the offensive boards adding six quick points seven minutes into the game. After earning his fourth foul early in the second half, Senior Derek Willis replaced him and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Labissiere put up key points off the bench, finishing with 11 points.

In order for Kentucky to continue winning key SEC match ups, they must play with a complete team effort. When the starters get into foul trouble or cannot find their shot, the bench must step up like they did tonight.
