2021 Chicago Bears Preview: Welcome

Roger Goodell’s chair was in the Hall of Fame. You know the one: the brown leather chair from which he conducted the 2020 Draft. It even made an appearance this year. It’s not staying there permanently – Goodell wants it back so he can watch football in it in the fall. Pro sports commissioners – they’re just like us! But it was there for an NFL Draft exhibit. A piece of furniture made famous by three days in the spring of 2020 where we got a brief respite from the bleakness and emptiness of *gestures broadly at everything.* It was fun. Goodell helped make it fun. Yeah, *that* Roger Goodell. Those three days transformed him from evil dictator to the buddy you watch football with, a transformation rivaled only by Tom Brady somehow becoming the most likable player in the league. 2020 was a weird year, man. And a difficult one. I mean, duh, right? It was in those moments during the draft or where we all watched The Last Dance together – separately, of course, as was the style at the time, but together – memes of certain moments and reactions to Jordan’s ruthlessness circulating on Twitter, that we really began to realize how much we need sports. And how much we took them for granted.

So football being there in the fall was a literal sight for sore eyes. And even during that six-game losing streak, it was good to be watching football. And, yeah, it was upsetting, but even that was good in its own way because we were upset about football instead of *gestures broadly at everything.*

As Jon Rothstein regularly reminded us on Twitter, this too shall pass. And it has enough so that we can fill NFL stadiums this fall. Like the country as a whole as it returns to normal, the Bears find themselves in something of a transition period. We’re not all the way there yet, but there’s a clear sense of optimism. A feeling that better days lie ahead. Welcome to the 2021 season, Bears fans. It’s good to see you again.
