Bears Name Sean Desai Defensive Coordinator
- Updated: January 22, 2021
Just what the title says. After a slate of interviews, the Bears decided to stay in house and name Sean Desai their defensive coordinator. From your author’s rundown of candidates:
A doctor of educational administration, Desai spent five years at Temple, the first three on the academic side before working as a defensive GA in 2009 and then the special teams coordinator the following year. Desai moved on to Miami to take a job as the assistant director of football operations, where he stayed for a year before getting back into coaching as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Boston College. Desai’s stay in Boston lasted only a year, after which he headed to Chicago to work as a quality control assistant. He held that position for six years before serving as safeties coach for the last two.
The hire is a bit of a surprise to me; I didn’t think he would be ahead of Jay Rodgers as far as in-house candidates go, but apparently Desai is thought very highly of at Halas Hall. That makes sense, given that he’s been here since the Trestman regime. While he’s only been a position coach for the last two years, the Bears think they’ve got another rising star on their hands. Former Bear Sam Acho spoke glowingly of the hire and also addressed what Desai’s scheme will likely look like.
HUGE hire for the Chicago Bears. Congrats to Sean Desai on becoming the next Bears Defensive Coordinator. They’ve got some holes fill at D line coach and offensive skill coaches, but this is a step in the right direction. Expect more of what you saw in 2018 but w/ his own flavor

In other tweets, Acho said that Desai was Vic Fangio’s right hand man and that he’s the spitting image of Brandon Staley. Desai will also be the first person of Indian descent to be a coordinator in the NFL, so big week for Indian-Americans serving as assistants to guys from Delaware.
If what Acho says about Desai turns out to be true, the ceiling for next year’s defense is immense. The facts that he’s been around for three coaching regimes and the Bears blocked Fangio from bringing him along to Denver say good things. This space predicts a top-5 defense and a return to the Pro Bowl for Eddie Jackson.
