Welcome to Chicago: Ryan Poles, General Manager

After a long search which saw the Bears cast a wide net, the Bears have found their man. The team has hired Ryan Poles, executive director of player personnel of the Kansas City Chiefs as their new general manager. Poles played offensive tackle at Boston College and signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He didn’t stick and shortly after, entered the other side of football, hiring on in Kansas City as a player personnel assistant. He’s been with the organization ever since, holding a variety of positions. Bears Wire/USA Today:
- Executive director of player personnel, Kansas City Chiefs (2021-Present)
- Assistant director of player personnel, Kansas City Chiefs (2018-20)
- Director of college scouting, Kansas City Chiefs (2017)
- College scouting administrator, Kansas City Chiefs (2013-2016)
- College scouting administrator, Kansas City Chiefs (2010-12)
- Player personnel assistant, Kansas City Chiefs (2009)
No, I don’t know why they listed two separate stints as “college scouting administrator.” What I do know is that the Vikings and Giants were both high on Poles as well. The Giants ended up hiring Joe Schoen from Buffalo, the Vikings would likely have hired Poles if the Bears didn’t. I also know Poles has worked in the Kansas City front office under three different accomplished executives: Scott Pioli, John Dorsey, and Brett Veach. Much like Sean Desai on the coaching side, he was kept around through multiple regimes. That says something about something. He’s been involved in the building of a juggernaut franchise. As long as he doesn’t try to interview Condoleezza Rice, he should be fine.
As far as what this means for the head coach search, keep an eye on Dan Quinn, Matt Eberflus, and whoever the Giants don’t hire between Brians Daboll and Flores. Flores is another former BC Eagle and was working for the Patriots while Poles was in college there, a connection highlighted by Erik Lambert of SportsMockery. That said, this space asserts that if there was a major connection there, Poles would have ended up in the Patriots organization at some point.
