Welcome to Chicago: Tashaun Gipson, Safety
- Updated: August 20, 2020
After letting Ha Ha Clinton-Dix leave in free agency, the Bears beefed up their secondary by signing Tashaun Gipson. Gipson appears to be the happy medium between Adrian Amos and Clinton-Dix. While Amos could play up near the line, his coverage skills aren’t quite as strong. The Bears want their safeties to be somewhat interchangeable to help with matchups, so Amos was allowed to leave and in came Clinton-Dix. Clinton-Dix was strong in coverage, but not so strong at making plays near the line, meaning Eddie Jackson had to leave his natural position to pick up the slack. Gipson’s not the cover safety Clinton-Dix is nor the box safety Amos is, but can do a little bit of both, and more than enough of the latter that BoJack shouldn’t have to do it anymore.
After four seasons in Cleveland to start his career, Gipson was allowed to walk after the 2015 season and signed with Jacksonville. Gipson spent three years there before becoming a cap casualty. Gipson signed with Houston before the 2019 season and was released after it. He’s picked of 23 passes over the course of his 8-year career, taking three of them back for touchdowns.
